Exhausted deer picked up near Sitka, AK
« on: December 15, 2011, 10:07:53 AM »

These juvenile deer were picked up by salmon fishermen near Sitka. They were exhausted and swam toward the boat, where they were picked up and released on shore.

Is it just me or are the pictures not showing up?

How do you post pictures. These are really cool. I don't have a photo sharing account anywhere. Do I need to have one, or is there a place to upload them here?

After you hit the reply button.  You will see the line "Attachments and other options", under the reply box section.  Hit that then pull the pictures up from your computer.  Hope that helps you.

Wow, great story! Great pictures, it shows what true sportsmen are really about!  Do you by any chance have the original link?

It is pretty cool. It came to me from a friend involved in this, so there isn't an original link.

After they rest up I wouldnt want to be on that boat. A cornered deer can wipe out a small army.

I agree. Definitely risky. They were docile on the journey back, and one was still so weak it was carried in a wheelbarrow. I didn't post the rest of the pictures because there were people that may not want to be shown on the web. The deer were like petting zoo animals. Aside from being exhausted, they were shivering. I think I would have put them in the dinghy and towed them back.

Here's the full story on the deer from the skipper of the boat:

"Tom Satre told the Sitka Gazette that he was out with a charter group on his 62-foot fishing vessel when four juvenile black-tailed deer swam directly toward his boat.  "Once the deer reached the boat, the four began to circle the boat, looking directly at us.  We could tell right away that the young bucks were distressed.  I opened up my back gate and we helped the typically skittish and absolutely wild animals onto the boar.  In all my years fishing, I've never seen anything quite like it!  Once onboard, they collapsed with exhaustion, shivering."  "This is a picture I took of the rescued bucks on the back of my boat, the Alaska Quest.  We headed for Taku Harbour.  Once we reached the dock, the buck that we had pulled from the water hopped onto the dock, looked back as if to say "thank you" and disappeared into the forest.  After a bit of prodding and assistance, two more followed, but the smallest deer needed a little more help.  This is me carrying the little guy.  My daughter Anna, and son, Tim, helped the last buck to its feet.  We didn't know how long they had been in the icy waters or of there had been others who did not survive.  My daughter later told me that the experience was something that she would never forget, and I suspect the deer felt the same way as well!"

and two additional pictures.  Enjoy!
