What do you like for a 1 in 9 twist bbl Coyote Load???
« on: February 06, 2012, 01:34:29 PM »
I just booked a Coyote hunt in the upper Allagash (ME) for next week.  After discussion with my guide, I will take my .223 Varmit.  I have a 4-12 scope on it at this time.

As I have not shot distances over 100 yards with this rifle to date, (untill I get in a few hours of practice tomorrow :) ) I am wondering what suggestions the group may have for loads.  Northern ME winter coyotes can easily top 60#'s but the .223 is considered more than enough.

My groups with 55 grn ammo are about 2" @100.  I am told that going to 62 or even 63 grn ammo should tighten my groups up.  Any AMMO suggestions are more than welcomed.  Thanks, Jim Terrio.

You could probably get 62gn to shoot from the 1-9 barrel but if you have consistant 2" groups from the 55grainers i would just stick with them. I do my true accuracy testing at 200 yards but if everything else equals out you should still get 6" 300 yard groups which is more than good enough for northern size coyotes. They range from 35-70 pounds in my area aswell and 300 yards of hunting accuracy should allow you to take any coyote. I like calling them in alot closer than that for most of my shots all though i have taken a few at hail marry distance too.

I use 69 gr match king Fiocchi ammo. I get clover leaves at 100 yards.

The black hills 68gr Match hollow point load has shot exceptionally well out of all the rifles I have tried it in and kills coyotes with authority.

I have tried 68/69 gr Sierra and Hornadys , got around 1/2" , but the best load to date in my gun is 55 gr V-max over 26.2 gr of RL-15. I do not have a 223 handi, but my savage  is a 1-9 twist, and that load holds around .850 at 200 yards if I can. At 300 it does open up to about 2+" for some reason, so maybe the heavier bullets would be better there. or maybe I just cant shoot that well farther away. :o

+1 tacklebury on the 55 gr. BTs.  I would think, in the Allagash, unless you're hunting a road or powerline, etc. your shots are gonna be inside 100 yards.  I haven't hunted there in over 40 years, but I doubt things have changed much......the  Allagash ain't Ft. Lauderdale ::) ::)

The guide say's shots range 125 average and out to 200 for longest bait site.  Likely open shooting lanes to baits.
20" of snow on the ground now and deep cold predicted for this coming weekend.  Should be good conditions.

Not the VERY far north but sure not Fla!!!! 8)   I'm going up to Fort Kent and then into Allagash, and out to the camp.  Should be fun....cool, but fun.  Again thanks for your suggestions.

I started with several different 55gr pills for my R-15 (which has a 1-9 twist), the most accurate were the V-Max's. I had reasonable groups, about 1 1/2" or so.  I dropped to under an inch by moving up to 60gr'ers, again V-Max.  These shoot much better at 300 yards than the 55's did, which is where nearly all of my yote shots are at.  I did buy some Berger 64's to give a try with, but haven't loaded them yet.

Mine loves the 69 grain Sierra Match Kings.  It shoots them under a minute of angle all day long and they will kill coyotes just fine.  I've also found that the heavier bullets do a lot better in the wind.
