Model 48 Topper 12ga
« on: January 15, 2012, 04:24:49 PM »
Buddy called me tonight and asked if id be interested in a 12ga H&R Topper. He told me the price and i said sure so i met him tonight and picked it up. Its an "I" serial number so 1948?

Here it is:

This is the worst spot in the walnut stock but the forend is rough

Trying to decide if shes worth the work to get her back in top shape. Think it may need most of the guts polished/ replaced. I love the latch.

And whats that screw in front of the hammer?

I'm just guessing, but I bet that screw holds in the firing pin.
I like that. Easy replacement.
That's a steel triggerguard, isn't it?

If it was me I would be tearing it down and sending it in for a high luster reblue. Great ad to your collection. Kurt

Congrats Joe, looks like it's built just like my 1940 M1908, the screw retains the firing pin.

I can see from the pictures that THAT gun is not worth your time and effort to bring back to life. I would however be willing to take it off your hands so that you may buy something worthwhile.  ;D ;D ;D ;D

By the way, I am sending Singblde my phone number so that he will not bother you with any more such deals. ;D ;D

That would have to be the deal of the day. 8)  I love it.

You really dont want to know what i paid for it either. I knew Joe would most likely take the time to restore it so i passed it on to him. I already have 4 12 gauges so i didnt really need it either.

My old Stevens .410 has that same screw in front of the hammer and quickdtoo and rio are right, it holds the pin in place.  About 45 years ago I watched a friend of mine make a pin to replace a broken one.  Don't know how long it lasted since he made it out of a big nail.

The FP retainer hole makes a great place to mount a peep sight too, thread a screw eye and add a lock nut and you're in business, worked for Dad for his turkey on my 1908!  :D

Got it back from Joe tonight and tore it down, Looks like its never been apart... at least not to be oiled or cleaned. No real wear i can see, but its dry and dirty in there. It was case hardened originally so bluing is out, will have to decide what im going to finish the metal with.

Heck yeah, I'd go for a restoration and try to get it as close as possible to what it looked like new. It's fun to "save" the old ones. More fun than buying a new one, IMO. You may have to work with a few limitations there, but that is what makes it interesting. Go slow and I bet it'll really look good when you're done.

The receiver is soaking in a mix of atf and kerosene right now, a little bit of scrubbing with a brass brush and i could see traces of the case hardening under the rust... im hoping its not too far gone. I dont mind a little patina on a gun. I will be needing a different fore end, this one isnt walnut like the stock.. its just stained to kinda match. Thats a ways off though, got to get it functional first.

Its definitely going to need a firing pin and all the springs. Does anybody know if the various firing pins interchange? Numrich is out of the style thats in the gun. Whats in the gun is the first one listed, the old model.  http://www.gunpartscorp.com/catalog/Products.aspx?catid=8085
