1st caribou hunt

I'm beginning to plan for my first caribou hunt in alaska.  I'm thinking about the lake clark area, but am open to other suggestions.  Anybody with any good experiences with outfitters would be greatly appreciated!!

Actually Saturday will be the first time I have ever used an outfitter or guide.  You can try the two URL's below and they might help.

You have two options up here: Guides and Transportors.

Guides have to be licensed and  will be there to assist you in the hunt. They will usually have a camp, food and other equipment.

Transportors just get you to where you want to go and require a different license.  Basically you supply everything and are on your own.

Try looking at the archives for references on guides.  You can post a message and ask the guys on the site if they have any information.

If you are considering a float trip on one of the nearby rivers or a drop off hunt in the L Clark area - Iliamna Air Taxi in nearby Iliamna has always treated me very well.  Timing is critical.  Sometimes the 'bou are there and some times they aren't - can't predict where they will be.  Last fall I think they came pretty close to that country in mid to late September.    

Remember the area immediately around Lake Clark is a national park. YOu have to hunt out side park boundaries.

Try www.alaskacariboucamps.com  They also offer unguided black bear hunts at real fair prices. I've been there several times and the place has an abundance of wildlife.
