savage 12FV
« on: January 15, 2012, 03:21:11 PM »
Hi everyone, I am considering a purchase of a 12fv in 223. For those of you who own or used one , are there any inherent  problems with them? And also can the barrel be changed later to a 22-250?   ???
  Your help is appreciated.

Thanks

I have a model 12FV in .22-250.  It's been an excellent rifle thus far.  Accuracy, reliability, fit & finish is all what you'd expect from Savage.  You could probably convert from .223 to .22-250 if you really wanted to, but that would entail a barrel change as well as swapping out the bolt face and internal magazine parts.  Seems like more of a pain than it's worth.

I have one in 204 Ruger. With Win. factory ammo it will shoot five shots off the bench into groups that you wouldn't believe if i told you. No problems with them that i can see.

Well I have the rifle now, it's an awesome shooter, I don't think I would refit to 220-250  though. I've used a .223 for the last 5 years and have developed a very accurate load for varmints. After burning up some factory rounds in the savage I'll neck size and load up some precision ammo.

 Thanks everyone for your input.

Good luck and happy shooting.  I'm sure you'll be more than happy with the 12FV.  They make for one hell of a varmint rifle.

Since both calibers use the same short action, yes, the barrels can be swapped out.
I carry a single shot.
'cause it only takes one shot.

Yes it can be changed from a 223 to 22-250, you will also have to change the bolt face as well as the bolt. If it is as accurate as most 223's are I would leave it alone and get a Twin to it in 22-250 ;D
