Jim, I  wouldn't start an eight year old shooting with anything like a .308....managed recoil or not.  I'd start with a .357 loaded with light .38s and slowly work up from there.  You don't need the kid scared and flinching, or he'll never be a shooter.  JMHO.

+1 on Pete's post.
I started my 6 year old grandson on the short bbl Handi with the stock only about 6 in long. I then loaded him some 243 youth loads. He killed a doe last year and this year he got a spike.
The 308 would probably make him a little gun shy even with the managed recoil.
                            Good luck and good shooting.

I started my son out with a 223 handi and then to a 44 mag handi. You can shoot 44 specials in the mag as well. He's killed deer with both. The 308things is too much for the little guy.....

I agree with all of the above. Let him work up to a
more powerful round when he is ready. Don't scare the ' heck ' out
of him. We need to hang on to all the future shooters we can get.
Good luck and be safe,  reclusej

You could work on a cast bullet load for the 308 Win that wouldn't scare the kid.
I've noticed in the Hodgdon Site a Trail Boss load using 150 gr bullets that have to be as mild as it gets for a jacketed bullet in that cartridge.

If you can make the308 fit him properly I would not discount it.
