Need this setup for a H&R for accuracy
« on: February 15, 2012, 10:20:47 AM »
I picked up a Magtec 410 to make one of the new 17 HH rifles out of today.  It has the most clever way of mounting the forearm I have ever seen on one of these break action guns.  If someone could figure out how to adapt this type of forearm hanger to the H&R's I am guessing you could eleminate 90% of the forearm accuracy problems.  If you look at the pictures you can see that the forearm really is hung off the hinge pivot, the forearm wood done not touch the barrel at all.  Just wanted to show that there may still be room to improve the NEF's.

Clever right?  Larry

Kool! An extension on a steel spacer would work, thanks Larry!  ;)

I've been trying to think of something like that.

The Magtec chamber swell is longer than a Handi which doesn't make for a place to mount the extension, whatcha end up with is just a hanger bar attached to the barrel much like I've already done, attaching the end of the hanger bar to a steel spacer doesn't seem like it would help much since it's also attached to the barrel, any suggestions to make it work Larry, or anyone?

I have been working feebly on a very similar idea, except the "hanger" incorporated directly to the bbl and using a modified original stock, with one of my old Hornet barrels. As pointed out, the short chamber swell makes rigid attachment difficult, but I am convinced that with the correct welding technique it can be done sans scailing the throat or interference with normal bbl removal. Now to find and befriend a good TIG welder...

The part the forearm hangs on is part of the underlug, it isn't attached to the barrel in front of the hinge pin, just close, construction looks like the way the Rossi is made sort of, looks like the underlug is forged.  Not having to add an attachment for the forearm sure makes the stubbing job easier.  My 17 cal barrel is on the way and when I can find some ammo I will make the reamer.  Larry

Hornady is now making their version of a 17 AH, called the 17 Hornady Hornet, I have a 17 AH so am going to make the factory version.  Thery are very simular rounds.  Larry

What donor barrel will you use? Will you cut your own reamer?
This is going to be an interesting project. G66

Funny you bring this up at this time....

I just acquired a additional 17HMR barrel....  It's going on the shelf for a later 17 hornet project...

That sounds fantastic!

I was on the fence between a .223 and a .17 HMR.  I'm wanting to do prone paper shooting between 150 and 200 meters.  I was afraid the .17 HMR would involve more windage adjustments.  This sounds like the perfect compromise.

Will NEF fit a .17 HMR barrel to a centerfire?

I ordered a Green Mountian 17 cal gunsmith barrel, 21 inches long, $33.00 for the project.  Except for the ejector it will be the same process as for a Handi.  I went with this one because the frame is smaller and the price was right.  H&R will not put a rf barrel on a CF frame, you need to aquire one from a RF gun.  Larry

Conventional wisdom says the metal in the RF barrels is softer than in the centerfire barrels. A barrel such as this might be shot a lot. What's your take on this? G66
An additional  thought...That underlever resembles a Farquehson. Really looks kool.

From previous discussions on barrel material, the 1137 mild steel barrels may suffer from throat erosion sooner than 4140 barrels, the GM blank Larry is using is 4140, I don't think anyone has put enough rounds thru an H&R  rimfire to centerfire converted barrel to know how long they last or if the barrel material is even an issue.

I did find a PTG 17HH reamer drawing FWIW.
