Don't spank that kid, the un doesn't like it.
« on: February 07, 2012, 10:39:57 AM »
Spanking kids can cause long-term harm: Canada study Tue, Feb 07, 2012                     TORONTO (Reuters) - Spanking children can cause long-term developmental damage and may even lower a child's IQ, according to a new Canadian analysis that seeks to shift the ethical debate over corporal punishment into the medical sphere.
The study, published this week in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, reached its conclusion after examining 20 years of published research on the issue. The authors say the medical finding have been largely overlooked and overshadowed by concerns that parents should have the right to determine how their children are disciplined.
While spanking is certainly not as widespread as it was 20 years ago, many still cling to the practice and see prohibiting spanking as limiting the rights of parents.
That point of view highlights the difficulty in changing hearts and minds on the issue, despite a mountain of accumulated evidence showing the damage physical punishment can have on a child, says Joan Durant, a professor at University of Manitoba and one of the authors of the study.
"We're really past the point of calling this a controversy. That's a word that's used and I don't know why, because in the research there really is no controversy," she said in an interview.
"If we had this level of consistency in findings in any other area of health, we would be acting on it. We'd be pulling out all the stops to work on the issue."
Durant and co-author Ron Ensom, with the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa, cite research showing that physical punishment makes children more aggressive and antisocial, and can cause cognitive impairment and developmental difficulties.
Recent studies suggest it may reduce the brain's grey matter in areas relevant to intelligence testing.
"What people have realized is that physical punishment doesn't only predict aggression consistently, it also predicts internalizing kinds of difficulties, like depression and substance use," said Durant.
"There are no studies that show any long term positive outcomes from physical punishment."
While banned in 32 countries, corporal punishment of children retains at least partial social acceptance in much of the world. Debates on the issue typically revolve around the ethics of using violence to enforce discipline.
With the study, Durant hopes parents will start to look at the issue from a medical perspective.
"What we're hoping is that physicians will take that message and do more to counsel parents around this and to help them understand that physical punishment isn't getting them where they want to go," she said.
She also hopes that countries that allow the practice - including Canada - will take another look at their child protection laws.
Canada is one of more than 190 countries to have ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, a 1989 treaty that sets out protections for children.
The treaty - which has been ratified by all UN member states except for the United States, Somalia and South Sudan - includes a passage stating that countries must protect children from "all forms of physical or mental violence".
"If we had two or three studies that showed that if you took 500 mg of vitamin C a day you could reduce cancer risk, we would all be taking 500 mg of vitamin C a day," Durant said.
"Here, we have more than 80 studies, I would say more than 100, that show the same thing (about corporal punishment), and yet we keep calling it controversial."

Not spanking kids has long term side effects too and we see them everyday in the form of people who have no respect for anything or anyone because there are little to no consequences for acting out.

Interesting!A smack on the bottom .............kills brain cells! Reckon they's some seriously damaged people posting right here, Huh? Me? I kinda thunk the brain was a bit further north. ;)

But then I notice the article "cites" research....but doesn't give a single reference for the sources of that research...who did it, when, where, why? ::) (obviously these things can have an affect on the publics regard for said research and it's validity)

In the article it states there are no studies that show any long term positive outcomes from physical punishment.
That is a lie because here is an article with studies on spanking that state otherwise. If one sentence is a lie, I figure the rest of it is also.
The number of un-spanked kids running around today is living prof that the Canada study is made up liberal gibberish. All it is, is misguided liberals wanting kids to have equal rights in the home so they can have rule over the parents. Don't believe it just look at the number of children that have no respect for adults or authority. Back in the day, pretty much every kid I grew up with got spanked by their parents for misbehavior, or disrespecting authority, or adults. No one dared to sass an adult. Misbehavior in school got you a spanking in school, then when you got home you got another from dad. There was no such thing as your parents acting like your friend, and running to the school demanding why their Johnny got spanked. Parents acted like parents, not friends. Not a danged thing wrong with spanking, done out of love. No doubt in my mind it makes better people.
There was no such thing as time outs, never even heard of such a thing until later in life. I'm thinking time outs are the reason there are so many liberals now a days. The liberals sure have done a good job at making more liberals.

My best friend has said many times, "If god had not meant for kids to get spanked, he would not have made Mom's and Dad's hands to fit so perfectly on a child's butt".  Sometimes it's the only way to get their attention.

1.  Mama Bears smack their young.
2.  Mama Mountain Lions smack their young.
3.  Mama Horses butt or bite their young.
4.  Mama Dogs nip their young.

It's the evolution of the young, to let them know what is dangerous.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

The UN can take a leap into a volcano for all I care. If the UN had been spanked when it was young they wouldn't be sticking their head where it doesn't belong.

More than 50 years ago if I did something wrong at school I got spanked at school and another spanking at home. If I was at somebodies house and did something wrong I got a spanking there and then thanks to the phone I got another spanking when I got home. I learned real quick right from wrong. Kids these days got it too easy.

I think our society pretty much reflects the outcome of a couple of generations of no spanking/discipline. I realize spanking is only 1 form of discipline/correction. Many were never instructed properly in LIFE so therefore so no standard for them to follow, partially everyone's fault. We allow children to raise children,,, let children raise themselves, TV and video games raise the children because no parents present or at least a  babysitter (competent one) for them. We must all be at least partly responsible because look who we have chosen to lead us...historically.
No matter why the parents are gone or missing the condition remains,,,,No Adult Supervision. People have to work or at least are supposed to, to provide for their families and themselves, and children are the worse for it, mostly.
It has always been tough to raise children right, even then we sometimes fail, but I think the results of 30 yrs. of this no spanking/discipline has proved it's worth. How would you like to be a teacher in the larger High School Jungles today??
I have noticed that many of  the same ones who do not believe in spanking also often ignore bad behavior in children til the child "gets on their nerves" then offers some kind of a verbal reprimand or in some cases even get violent/abusive with the child, cursing, insulting or slapping the child around, which is WRONG! You can see this in the stores in town, I know that all parents who support this no spanking attitude are not directly... guilty of physical abuse, but if you fail to discipline or correct them sometimes say NO, the child grows thinking that they deserve only the best of everything for a little effort, they cannot wait to acquire things patiently but want everything at the start, like everything mom and dad has but right now and better than M&D had..maybe just another form of abuse...Unrealistic Expectations....Why? you guessed it....... No discipline, discipline comes in more than the form of a spanking but spanking tempers the body and disciplines the mind.....DISCIPLINE, NOT ABUSE IS THE ANSWER.
  Just my opinion

My first wife and her brother were NEVER spanked and both turned out to be great and successful adults. She graduated college with a 3.99 average doing 164 credit hours in four years and had a very successful career until her death at 45. My brother-in-law obtained his PH.D. by age 26 and is the chief forensic psychologist for for the state of NC. The only time I can condone spanking a child is when they are still to young to easily reason with and it is to prevent a life threatening action such as running out into the street.
