firing pin not hitting primer hard enough to fire
« on: February 01, 2012, 02:47:54 PM »
I've got a 325-b bolt action 30-30 that the firing pin just barely dents the primer. Anybody have a cure for that? Any help is appreciated.

Factory ammo or reloads?

Sounds like it could have a weakened firing pin spring, have you disassembled the bolt and cleaned back in there?

May help to diagnose with pics and some more data.  ;)

Could be a briken fireing pin also. If the dent is not prefectly round, that`s probly what it is.

I'll get some pictures. It doesn't seem to matter if its reloads or factory. I had one out of six fire the other night when took it out. I'm not sure how to take the bolt apart.

The first picture is of the dents the firing pin puts in the primers, four of the cartridges are factory loads, one is a reload. The second shows the bolt cocked. The next shows the bolt fired with a case in the chamber. The next shows the bolt fired without a case in the chamber. The last a picture of the bolt. Sometimes it fires, most of the time it doesn't. Any help disassembling the bolt would be appreciated. Thanks

This was about the best help I could find for you.  Might be a bit technical, but as a start it might help.  You might review it with a local smith too, if you don't care to disassemble the bolt.  Our local guy is very reasonable and quite often charges me nothing if it's a minor fix.  He helps figure out disassembly/re-assembly.  Just a thought, but hopefully this link will help you a bit.  I couldn't make out much detail in your pictures due to fuzziness, if you camera has a "macro" or close-up mode, that might help some.  ;)

As noted above either a weak spring or a dirty bolt/spring.  I have had both.  Because you need to take the bolt apart to inspect the spring, put in a new (stronger if possible) spring while the bolt is apart.

If that does not fix the problem then it will obviously require a new firing pin as the next step.
