I was shooting the 165 grains as the White box FMJ ammo I found cheap was what I was using for practice.
I would look at your source of cheap ammo for practice and then buy the HP that matches it in weight.

I started with 165 but found 180s tended to group a little better out of my gun. I find the most accurate HP round then shoot a practice round the same weight as that.

Good advice!

Pick a good known manufacturer with quality track record Or one loading a quality bullet like a XTP. I like the Hydro shok and CorBon lines personally. But Silver tips have a following too. Not to mention name brands loading gold dots, Barnes copper jobbers and XTP bullets.

#1 importance is functioning then performance. (accuracy included) I prefer a bit heavier projectile. In defensive handgun bullets, just a bit right of center. ::)  I have long subscribed to the big slow heavy as opposed to ultra light super speed bullet. But much can be said for adaquite penetration. So for me i like the " balance" the 165g provides. Better vel than a 180g but more foot pounds than a 155g. Maybe 155 in summer
Months as less heavy clothing will be worn and the higher vel will inhibit over penetration.

Kinda strange to think that way but it's the plain truth of it. ESP in light of today's liberal world.

When I first got my .40 cal Glock 27 I tried about ten different brands and different weights of the major ammo companies. It came down to Double Tap 155 or 165 grain JHP's. The 165 grain was the most accurate and hit at about 1200 FPS from a 4 in. barrel. It out shot the Corbons, Remmie Golden Sabers, Federal Hydra Shocks, and a bunch more. You have to try different ammo brands and weights. Let the handgun tell you what it likes by the accuracy you achieve.

Kind of grown fond of the Winchester Ranger 180 T-series HP's, that's what my department issues us.  Seems accurate in all of my .40's, no matter the barrel length.

The 180's seem to be more accurate from my gun, but I'd feel fine carrying either.
