Aspiring zookeeper and frequent Tiffany's shopper Newt Gingrich made some fresh waves in his wavy presidential campaign last week in Georgia, claiming the Obama administration wanted to force smaller vehicles and electric cars like the Chevrolet Volt on Americans, saying: "You can't put a gun rack in a Volt." One Chevrolet Volt owner took that as a challenge.

I am sure Newt ws speaking metaphorically, and to that extent he was right, it was not actually about physically putting the gunrack in, it was more like watching Romney wearing jeans. I must say that after retirement I may well buy me a Bad Boy electric buggy, I just live about 3 miles from town by backroad and dirt path so the range is not an issue, completely silent, 45 mile range, up to 35 miles an hour, not too shabby, and the gun racks are built in, one hell of 4 a wheel capability.

A stunt like this adds credence to the original statement.


But Gingrich may as well have said unicorn instead of volt, because of the rarity of these almost unavailable cars.

About 70000 ford edsels were sold in its first year of production, and about 8000 volts. The edsel has a reputation for being a sales failure

Well if I'm going to be forced into driving a battery operated vehicle make mine a Tesla X all wheel drive SUV.   The gun rack woundn't look quite so out of place.

The "revolution" of "green energy" that commenced under Clinton/Gore (remember him - the self-proclaimed "Inventor of the Internet"), was a pretext to mind bending the gullible American know-nothing population who wouldn't look past the political rhetoric to discover the Axis of Evil lurking there.  It was a pretext for the liberal rich to get Filthy Rich through the banking and currency exchange of "carbon offsets" under Cap and Trade. 

Global Warming - what  HOAX!  Save the Planet - what a HOAX!  Reduce Federal Spending (Department of Energy) through a reduction in dependence on foreign oil - what a HOAX!  Politicians "working" to make life better in America - that is TWO HOAXES in one statement!

The problems with electric automotive transport is their batteries.  Battery technology needs a significant boost to be viable. 

One recent TV documentary discussed an American INet-Bubble Entrepreneur spending $100M in Germany to create a car company and infrastructure that OWNED the batteries in their manufactured cars.  You bought the car.  They own the battery.  They built 14 "charging stations" throughout Germany and within the driving range of their batteries.  You pull in.  They exchange the battery for one that is fully charged and keep your their discharged battery there.  It was reported to take LESS time than to fill a tank with gasoline, i.e. 3 to 5 minutes to remove and replace the battery.  You drive away.  These batteries could also be recharged at home and when parked in the garage overnight.

Still, there is a LONG way to go to the necessary infrastructure and mindset change, if ever.  In the mean time, we will experience the utter disillusionment of machines that are too expensive, do not deliver what the salesmen said (go figure), do not reduce America's dependence on foreign oil (in particular when drilling on Fed Land is suspended by the current Administration and the favorable North American Canadian oil pipeline to Texas Refineries is rejected by the same current Administration in favor of Venezuelan and Saudi oil - a COMPLETE reversal of Campaign promises).

Why am I not surprised by any of this?

If GE wants to do that, it's their money. At least seemingly so on the surface. Looking at it a little more critically, I wonder what kind of a sweetheart deal they are getting to do this. Those other cars being replaced cost 20-something thousand dollars. Volts are a lot more expensive than that. I cannot imagine a fleet decision being made that doesn't consider that large a cost difference. It looks like the guys who do the most driving are the ones exempt from the rule.

So, this is likely just a little more cronyism and taxpayer bailout in action. Betcha GE or GM is getting an enormous incentive from the government to do this.

Considering only about 8000 volts have been sold to date, GE's purchase will easily match that.
