Bowfishing

Anyone using the ams bowfishing reel? My 11 year old wants to try it. I want to try it on a Bear Brave II bow. Can anyone tell me if it will work?

The AMS is all I've used since I discovered it a few years ago.  It is much, much, much better than the old style of fishing reel types.  It mounts in the spot where sight pins would normally attach.  On I my most recent rig I needed to take it to a pro-shop so they could find me the right bracket for an older bow (never use a good bow bowfishing). 
 
If I had to give up AMS reels I'd probably just go to a pitchfork, they are that good.

 The one I had was just a spool you wrapped the line around by hand. Some of the guys I have ran into said the reels with a spool get bunched up and you loose your arrow from time to time. I found a retriever pro from the company you are talking about at a pawn shop. It doesn't have a spool it just stores the line in the bottle. It has worked pretty good for me. No trouble with it. I can't compare it to another reel type, but it has a lot less drag than the old metal bell type you wind by hand. I can shoot quite a bit farther now. That makes a huge difference in the day for gar.

Back in the day I used to bow fish all the time. I had a good friend who wanted to try his luck but was left handed so that took care of that. Anyway got too think'n and he had a big spinning surf rod and I hooked him up with his rig to my bow. We had a blast. And yes there were a few no bail release shots. lol

I shoot left handed, no problem.  AMS makes left rigs.
 
It will work fine on any type of bow that was set up to take sight pins.  Im not sure what you could do on a recurve with no places for attachment...  Old used bows are cheap though... cheaper than the reel will be.

Not trying to derail your thread but some of the guys around here do something similar to what 52bagman mentioned. They mount a zebco 808(?) to a stabilizer with two hose clamps. Their line is just mono in a high poundage. I am guessing it's whatever was spooled on the reel?


As for mounting on the bear brave 2 recurve, it will work. That model has the two holes drilled and tapped that the factory mount attaches to.
