pricing thoughts on Remington Model 12
« on: January 24, 2012, 08:51:37 AM »
I stopped  by a local pawnshop and got to talking with the clerk. He told me he had a model 12 carbine on pawn and it's pawn date is about up and the clerk said he did not think the rifle will be picked up. He showed it to me and it appears to be in good condition. Bluing is about all gone but has a decent patina on the metal. Wood is in good condition with no signs of cracks. The action was nice and smooth. Everything appears to be original including the sights. Round barrel. The clerk claimed that they had $300 in it. Don't know what they are going to ask for it but I thought I could maybe get it for around $400. Good price? They are such sweet rifles and it was the same model that I first learned to shoot with as a child. This pawn shop historically has been kind of weird on gun prices. Most stuff is to high IMHO but every once in awhile they have something at a great price. A few years ago I bought a 95%+ Bulgarian Makarov from them for $115! What do you all think?

A gent at our local gun show had one with an octagon barrel and crescent butt and he wanted over $500 for it. I didn't get it. On the other hand someone had a round barrel one with some old holes drilled in the reciever that sold for $150 before the show started and was resold for $200 on the day the show opened. $400 might be a little pricey.

A nice gun store in the area has one of the above with a cash only asking price of $650. It is solid and all there but looks well used.

Grey rats, or rustbuckets, don't bring much demand or $$$$ - but better-to-mint condition, or unusual,  models/specimens sure do.

I sold a .22 Short (only), octagon bbl, wit the side of it's receiver marked "Gallery Special", that was in VERY good condition, with a soft, non-polished, metal blue, about 3 years ago for $750 - but the model certainly wasn't a run-of-the-mill general production gun.

Since he lied about what he has in it he will likely lie to you about other things as well. It ain't worth nearly that and he knows it and is likely marking it up at least 200% if not more.

I was in a local pawn shop today talking to him about accepting guns I might buy in the future via the internet. He charges $15 to accept them and run the paperwork. He had a clean looking 22 on the wall for $100. He said he doesn't mark guns up like most of the other pawn shops but just tries to get for them what he has in them plus the interest on the pawn no more. Looking at the prices he had I believe him.

He was selling NIB Kel-Tec P32s and P3-ATs for $100 less than the gun shop I had just left. That shop has about 1500 guns in stock and this guy with less than a hundred is selling same guns a hundred bucks less.
