Occupy & Hate Crimes

http://news.yahoo.com/three-occupy-oakland-protesters-charged-hate-crimes-065602319.html

  (Reuters) - Three Occupy Oakland protesters accused of surrounding and taunting a woman before stealing her wallet were charged on Friday with robbery and hate crimes, authorities said.
Michael Davis, 32, Nneka Crawford, 23, and Randolph Wilkins, 24, confronted the woman on the streets of Oakland in February after she told them not to riot in her neighborhood, the Oakland Police said in a written release.
"She was surrounded by three protestors and battered as they yelled vulgar epithets regarding their perception of her sexual orientation," Oakland Police spokeswoman Johnna Watson said.
The female victim was not identified except as a 20-year resident of the neighborhood.
"Her wallet was taken during the crime," Watson said. "The victim broke away from the group and called police, who were able to arrest one suspect near the scene."
Watson said the other two suspects were arrested at a February 29 Occupy Oakland protest.
Each was charged by the Alameda County District Attorney's Office with felony counts of robbery and hate crimes, Watson said.
An Occupy Oakland organizer could not be reached for comment on Friday evening.
A rallying cry of the movement has been that 1 percent of the population has too much of the nation's wealth and the remaining 99 percent is disadvantaged.
It has lost momentum in recent months after police cleared encampments in New York, Oakland and other major cities.

  They should be charged for the actual crimes they did, there likely being plenty of fertile ground for a solid conviction.  I deplore this recently fabricated category called "hate crime".  In order to competently prosecute anyone one such a charge, they would have to know "beyond a reasonable doubt", just what the accused was thinking.
   Frankly, punishing a person for what they may or may not have been thinking, is bogus in my opinion.

  Isn't it time to step back and ask ourselves; "Is it really correct to punish somebody for what we believe they were thinking ?".

    Punish people for the crimes they actually did, not for what our imagination can conjure up as to what their intentions were while doing it !

Yeah, I guess its just easier to join the local occupiers group and complain, than it is to put forth the work and effort to make yourself attractive to an employer. Bet there wasn't one occupier that asked one of the people they were protesting what they needed to do to get hired.
I'm still looking for the place in the Constitution where it says that the haves have to fork over some of what they earned to the have nots. Maybe its just not in there.

That may be so TM, but I think they are assembling in front of, and petitioning the wrong people. Many of the people the occupiers are blaming worked hard for what they have.
Because they are chastising wealthy people. It appears, its more out of envy than anything else. The guarantee in America is to have an opportunity to wealth, not equal wealth for all. If their complaints are truly about fuel and food prices, perpetual war, unemployment, debt predation, HC, etc.. they need to take their complaints to Pennsylvania Avenue, not to rich guys that drive expensive cars.

.
I went to NYC on a few outings with my wife and to see my son's band play,,,,I saw OWSt protestors most looked pretty conventional, most had some kind of degree I believe....sure there were hangerons and kooks that were featured on mass media, but for the most part it was regular folks, young and old, trying to break up the logjam of  wealth and influence that have stopped this countries progress, and so excercize their Right to Assemble and Petition......nothing to fear but fear itself. I think more and more ;mainstream; may join forces with this movement in unity for a number of reasons..food, fuel, perpetual war, unemployment,  debt predation, HC, and so on and so forth.

oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  TM;
   Consider your words which I highlighted above..first those "kooks" are the OWS mainstream, not "hangers-on'...and the mass media being quite in their corner, did their best to make these clowns look good.
   As you said yourself, most had 'some kind of degree'...curiously, there are decent, hardworking people across this country who are making a life for themselves WITHOUT a degree..how ever do they do it ???
   Perhaps they are those who think 'a degree' entitles them to a free or at least half-price ride...  Naturally a degree in basket-weaving, women's studies or some other such defunct field cannot even offer the likelihood of a job in it's respective venue.

  No; there are too many hard working people are making their way without a free ride..or falling for the assinine "class envy" bait, to make us believe the bogus arguments of the OWS are legitimate !

Actually, most of those "hard working people" have jobs soley because of the efforts of those people "of wealth and influence". Think for just a short moment and it will come to you...wealthy people invest money, it gets used to create jobs......same with the banks, they provide the capital that makes jobs possible. And for the most part the money banks are putting into job creation comes from Joe Average and his little dab of savings that he's encouraged to invest in since he was a kid.

Soooo.......level the field, take the wealth from the banks and the rich, and where are you? No jobs, no homes built, no cars bought......sounds great doesn't it, especially if "everyone is equal now". Then the only employer who has finances is the government, which will expand expotentially......and freedom is a dim dream of the past. But then that's OK as long as there are no rich people any more....... Socialism wins! :(

  Cuts;
   No disagreement here..a trickle down economy is the only one that works.  My point is with the OWS gang who are demanding big money simply because they "have a degree" and that should be a free ticket to riches.  They should quit complaining and get a job, any job, get 2 jobs if they must...any job is more honorable, than is a govt handout!

Heh... :o ..? Do you and I live in the same country and watch the same mass media..??....As I said I happened into NYC during the 'occupation' on a few occassions and there was alot of regular folks wanting a fair shake, and lot less dictatorship of the 1% and banksters....Heck, if you lost your home you might have joined forces, too.

Yeah we perobably do live in the same country and watch the same media. And we both know which way that media is slanted.

I've worked all my life, and I've done ok......not hurtin fer certain! But then I've been willing to work.
