I need to clarify.  They opened the cans during rain.  They put the lids on during sun to heat the water and not evaporate it.  It can be a problem climbing the ladder to put the lids on and off.  I agree with the pipe.  My late FIL wound about 50' or 100' of 3/4" black plastic tubing on a 4' square piece of plywood and put it in the sun.  He said it got so hot he couldn't tough the water coming off.  If water gets turned off or pressure lost from "city water" we will have to rely on streams and rainwater and maybe hand pumps.  Having water on a tower of some sorts gives us pressure for use in existing plumbing.

Could just be as easy as putting some food grade barrels up on the roof, running them in series, cutting a drain spout on the bottom edge of one and run it into a hose. I've used rain barrels on downspouts before and the water got hot; haven't set up at our new place yet.

OIF we left 1.5l water bottles out in the sun for hot showers and shaving, even on cold days. You can get a lot done with 1.5l of water if you plan accordingly ... 2l would be like Christmas!

Ive got a couple of those shower bags they sell to campers. they hold a few gallons of water that you can let the sun heat or heat on the stove and pour in. Neet thing about them is a guy could hang them right in your existing shower or tub and do it inside even in the winter.

Capturing rain water seems like common sense and smart (it is!).  But some states actually have laws against that!  go figure.  ::)

But just as crazy, some states also claim ALL the water below ground, and even the water a homeowner or survivalist might catch and store in a cistern might be illegal!

Of course the authroities have to find those things first, right?   :D   ;)

The Platte River system has the Whopping Crane use it, so the endangered species people got laws passed that no body could impound water that would contribute to the Platte River. So No rain barrels for Colorado. Smart right.

In Nam whenever we got showers, on the firebase once a month, we filled 155mm powder canisters [about 6" dia and 30" long] with water and left them in the sun for a couple hours. Army had shower buckets we would dump the hot water in and hoist if up.
