Police say she endangered him, the boy defends his mom. He'd been kicked off 5 times. Chk out the boys name, almost as bad as Sue. POWDERMAN.

There are times when the police overstep their bounds, I feel this is one. Won't hurt the boy to walk, maybe he will learn a lesson. Police need to stay out of it.

And it wasn't in the snow or uphill both ways. There was probably a good reason he got kicked off the bus. I'll give the parent the benefit of the doubt until the nosy news media tells a different story.

When I was a kid and I missed the bus I had to walk to school also. It was every bit of 5 miles and I walked more than a few times. It never hurt me a bit. I was young and even the steep hills did not bother me. Dale

You know there is one thing these do gooders don't consider.
On Saturday or Sunday--holidays or summer they would not have blinked an eye at him doing this on his own---which he probably does as do most of his friends.

We walked a bit over a mile each way all through school, bad weather didn't matter either. There were no snow days, we went, and that was in snowy ILL. Every day you'll see a long line of cars at the local grade school, folks picking up their kids. Make them RIDE THE BUS. A lot of gas would be saved, lives too. POWDERMAN.

well i guess now making your kid walk farther than from the couch to the bathroom is child abuse. i wish my granpa was still alive, i would show him this and he and i would get a good laugh.
my dad, who is now 80 and in perfect health, said when he was a kid, he would ride his pony 3 or 4 miles to school, then tie up the reins and slap it on the butt and it would trot back home.then he would walk home in the afternoon. he thought he had it made cuz lots of kids had to walk both ways.
my granpa said he had a model t car in his last year of school. when he got to school he would have to drain the oil into a bucket and set it behind the big potbelly stove.then after school he would pour it back in the engine and jack up one wheel and spin it with car in gear to get it to start.but he only had to do this in the winter where he lived in wisconsin. in the summer he said he often had to drop the oilpan and tighten the main bearing caps. but only cuz it was so wore out he used pieces of leather or bacon rinds for bearings. imagine a kid nowadays doing this just so he could drive to school?

Guess I'm going to be the odd man out here. When I was a kid I had to walk to school too, and it was around 3 miles one way maybe even a bit more. Heck, guess you could say I lived on the wrong side of the tracks because they were between me and school. If I was late heading out I'd have to wait for one to three trains to pass before I could move on. I'm still alive to talk about it and no worse for wear. However, and a big however, we don't live in the same world as when WE were kids. Every time you turn on the news there's arother kid murdered or missing. No way I'd let a 10 year old walk out of my sight, or the sight of someone old enough to be responsible and safe, let alone 4 1/2 miles all alone. Kids have come up missing just walking alone to the corner store, heck even out of their own yards when not watched! I give her credit for wanting to teach him a lesson but I think she should have driven along right behind him or walked with him to see he got there safe and sound. Heck, she was even on vacation so she had the time to do so. I give the cops credit for once doing their job. If one of my young grandkids were out alone I'd apreciate the police looking out for them. Before ya rag on me just picture this.....it's your kid. He doesn't make it to school. Later he's found dead or never found at all. A cop says oh yeah, I saw him walking and he was fine when I saw him so I didn't pay him any mind. I don't know about you but 1) I'd be upset with myself for letting him go alone and 2) I'd be upset with the cop for not doing his job and making sure the kid was safe and got where he was going safe! Lets not rag on the cops for doing their job folks. It's good to hear of them doing something right.

Spirithawk, it is a different era to be sure, and there are more places around today that a 10 year old wouldn't be safe walking 1/4 mile through, nevermind 4.5 miles. I used to walk 2 miles each way, along busy road, across a highway, but that was a different era I know. I think what gets me here is that the Mom has been cited for endangerment. I don't fault her decision, I don't fault the police for doublechecking, but the citation is a statement that our children really aren't ours.

Unfortunately, I can see both sides here too. The parent wants to teach the boy a lesson, but so many weirdo's out there today, 4.5 miles thru any city nowdays, and something could happen. Maybe she could have bite the bullet for the week, and drove him, and then made him do some sort of community work for punishment. Or make him help the bus driver clean the bus at the end of the day, since that's what he got in trouble for, was yelling on the bus. Some sort of work detail to let him know he isn't getting a free pass. gypsyman

When I was a kid it was common for kids to walk a few miles to and from school. When I started going to a school farther away I rode a bike. A few bikes were stolen but I would get another one because used bikes cost about $20 for a good one back then.

good story. race should not have been mentioned. any mother today knows their neighbourhood. probably knew the risks and the chance of intervention. in the end the risk that a kid never gets the message and grows up wrong is just as big as the immediate fear
