S&W Model 66---Is it worth it?
« on: December 05, 2011, 03:38:52 PM »
Called my LGD (30 miles away) about installing a front sight for me.  He knows I love dem Smiths, so he told me he had a Model 66,pre-lock, stainless, 4"bbl, 98%, box and all papers for $500.00 firm.  When he sez firm, you waste your time even trying to get a box of bullets out of him. I haven't seen the gun, but I'm going over Wednesday to take a look see.  I know guns, cars, whatever are worth what the buyer is willing to pay and the seller is willing to take.  Just wondering if $500.plus sales tax is a fair price.

I have a 4 inch Model 66 that I would never sell for that.  I like K frames and a stainless one in 357 is great in my book.

Sound like it's the right price if it is all he said it is.

If I had the cash I'd buy it for that.

I think that is a fair price for a 98% gun in the box.  I gave $300 for my well used 2 1/2" last February and was happy to get it.

It had a set of rubber Hogues on it, I made these but am looking for a set of factory finger groove compacts for it.  The engraving on the frame is a Sheriff's Office ID marking; it used to an issue revolver.

So, what did you do?

If its minty, its not an unreasonable price - otherwise a tad high.  I recently bought a nice, older model 65 for $350, and paid $465 for a like-new-in-the-box older model 36 3".  Assuming the dealer is getting a percentage for selling (typically15-25%), he has some room to play.

P.S.  FWIW, I find the older S&W revolvers are often a great deal compared to current production revolvers.

Damien   Your 66 looks like it has been polished to look like nickel plated. I knew they were doing that to some SA cowboy guns but didn't know S&W was doing it. Do you know how the gun came to look like that? was it a factory job or custom work?.

On my first M65 I did somehtng like that with a LEAD AWAY cloth.
Shinned it right up to look like bright nickel.
Get a new cloth and an old towel and and rub.

Still have my old duty 66 4", OD 66 3", recently picked up a trade in 66 4" w/ lock for a house gun.  2 M 19s, 4" still in the safe.  They are not going anywhere.

This is the way that it was when I got it.  I don't think that it is factory, others that I have seen are more of a matte finish.  Since mine was a former PD/SO issue revolver, I think that it was polished to cover up alot of scratches and assorted blemishes from use.

Apparently, the price was reasonable for the market there.
I've yet to pay more than $400 for a 66, and that benchmark was for a very nice four inch 66 no-dash. I must admit that I have had a fair share of luck when it comes to buying used S&W's, but being on hand when the pieces come out, and having the cash in my wallet to buy at that moment, bring more of 'em home at decent prices than any other tactic.
I told my pap and mam I was going to be a mountain man; acted like they was gut-shot. "Make your life go here, son. Here's where the people is. Them mountains is for Indians and wild men." "Mother Gue", I says "the Rocky Mountains is the marrow of the world," and by God, I was right. Keep your nose in the wind and your eye along the skyline
