extractor problem on Ultra?

I recently bought what I think is a 2006 Ultra in .223. It has a fluted barrel and pistol grip plastic stock, with a wide forearm and a sliding bracket for a bipod. I also bought a RCBS Precision Mic to help get better accuracy from my reloads. I am unable to chamber the fake cartridge used to measure where the lands start. This morning when I shot it for the first time, I shaved a little brass from the upper side of the case. Could my extractor be bent or misshapen to cause this? Would this require a factory fix? Or my local gunsmith?

Welcome to GBO.  I haven't had this issue with mine, but you might review the FAQ.  There are ejector tuning and swapping and such steps in there which might help.  Think one had to do with a BB, but that might be for ejectors.  ;)  Take a look in there, lotta good info.  ;)

 From your discription it sounds like it may be just a misunderstanding on how the extractor operates... The 223 is a rimless case, for the extractor to work it needs to fit in the resessed rin of the case. So if you incert a case the extractor will slide along the case and snap into the rim. Then when closing the gun the extractor and the case will seat to its headspace. Leaving the case head flush with the breech.
 
If I have mis understood, maybe some pictures of what your describing would help...

The Fluted Ultra Varmints are all extractors, not ejectors, a person can reduce the pressure the extractor puts on the case body by removing the rear roll pin from the underlug, remove the extractor and leaf spring, bend the spring so there's not so much arch in it and reassemble. You can also break the top edge of the chamber with a stone so it's not so sharp, that would help also.  ;)

The extractor fits behind the rim alright, but it appears either the extractor is pushing up more than it needs to or is bent. I'm not sure I'm brave enough to disassemble and put less bend in the spring. I'll look thru the FAQ's to see if there is something that applies. THANKS, hc18flyer

Its removel is simple simon.. just a couple roll pins!!
 
Its supposed to push up and its a harded part, it would break before it bent... It still could be faulty, but I'm betting its just a stiff spring or stiffer than your used to or expect it to be.

hc18flyer, just so you're not confused, you only need to remove one roll pin, just the rear most small pin which retains the extractor.  ;)

If you do remove your extractpr pay attention to how that spring is oriented when it comes out.  It will save you searching in the FAQs for a picture of it when you go to reassemble.

Sounds like maybe a small burr on the lip of the extractor.
Open the action and get full extention on the ext. and remove the barrel. Pack a little tissue in the ext. cavity and a little ways down the chamber or masking tape up anywhere you dont want grit to get into.. Put some fine emory paper on a dowel, or such, of about that case dia. and polish the lip edges a bit (just enough to take off any burrs). Puff off any grit, pull the tissue and/or tape, use an slightly oiled O-Tip to swab up and pick up any left over grit and try it again.
