More and more women embracing gun ownership

Play CBS News Video
(CBS News)

The face of the American gun owner is changing.

More women than ever are picking up rifles, shotguns, and handguns. And target shooting is one of the fastest-growing female sports.

But, looks can be deceiving. We're not talking "Dirty Harriet" here, notes "Early Show" contributor Katrina Szish.

Female participation in target shooting in the U.S. has nearly doubled in the last decade, growing to nearly five million women since 2001.

Pistol-shooting mommas and rifle-wielding yoga instructors may not be the type of woman who comes to mind when you hear about female shooters, but they're dominating the sport.

They say they shoot not only for self-protection, but because it relieves stress, helps them find peace and concentration and - feel feminine.

For instance, Deirdre Gailey, who says, "I'm a yoga instructor, I work at a vegan bakery -- and I also like to shoot guns."

Aren't guns and shooting the opposite of yoga's Zen experience?

"Yoga's Zen-like quality can be applied to shooting guns in a lot of ways,' says Gailey. "Shooting guns takes focus, concentration, and it doesn't always have to be about violence."

"(When I cook)," Gailey added, "I use a chef's knife. You have respect for a knife as a tool that you use in your craft. And I think guns can be used in the same way."

Personal opinion is a good thing, and everyone is entitled to one.  The hard part is separating informed opinion from someone who is just blowing hot air....

Yeah, all about money, but the CBS piece, showing pretty good looking women, sounding reasonable and articulate.  Talking about focus, and empowering, and relaxing, and fun.    Very much not the usual view of gun owners from those big corporate media giants.

Twelve years ago the CCW law here in Missouri failed. The Carnahans with help from Hilary Clinton who made personal appearances in St Louis and KC  managed to narrowly defeat it. The Post Dispatch had said the streets would run with blood. When the legislature passed the law a couple of years later and then overrode the governors veto it was hailed as gross misuse of power. Comments were 10 or 12 to 1 anti gun. If you look at the weekend paper for this weekend you will note that pro gun comments outnumber anti's by about 8 to 1. CCW is a success. It did not produce a blood bath, and although it is not a panacea it has made a noticeable difference. Guns are not villanized like they were a few years ago, they are more socially acceptable. As long as the progun forces are judicious and don't go all redneck and egotistical they will continue to grow more so. This is one of those cusps where some tact and restraint could really yield big returns.

The ccw law was passed not to long ago never saw much need for it as  it is legal in this state to to buy guns at any gun show with no paper work.

Just because you can buy a gun does not mean you can legally carry it. ;)  If you use it, you will find out what I mean.
