Sell Me on a .41 mag

.......and the 41 is what, ? a lowlyer .410 magnum?      is lowlyer even a word?    but the 45 colt IS a .452....... but alas, not a magnum in name.......

I have a 4" 57 and I love it. I need to get some cast bullets, but so far the Winchester 240 gr. Platinum Tips are incredibly accurate through it, and they'll do fine with deer. No bear and very few hogs at my end of the state.

I've hunted with .357, .44 Mag., .44 Spl., 45 Colt (regular loads - not hot), and the .41. They all do the job quite well on deer and I'm sure you'll be happy with the .41.

Think I've read the entire thread , didn't see whether you owned any other handguns.  If this is your only " go-to " hunting handgun , I'd pass.  Get a 44 or 45. As someone else stated , the 41 won't do anything the 44 won't do and probably better.  Recoil,,,,not an issue.  You said you reload...ya don't need to load everything up for hunting elephant.  But iffin ya want to hunt elephant...well ya get the picture.  If your just getting a 41 for the H of it...go for it. Check on the availability of loading componets , think you'll find the 44 is a lot more abundant.

This guy makes a lot of sense to me.  I'm not attached to the .41M even though I like it ALOT.  But because of components and popularity of ready ammo, as well as the ability to load up "to elephants,"     I'd choose the potential found in a .44M if it was my only large bore sidearm!  And an S&W 4" 'mountain gun' in either choice would carry nicely too.
 
A M625 mountain special in .45 Colt might be another good choice.

I had an oldtimer that was handgun hunting when i was still a kid say this about it. If you want to look cool and atract attention at the range show up with a 41mag or 45 colt. everyone will think you know handguns. If you want to kill crap (crap wasnt his chosen word) get yourself a 44 mag and dont worry about what everyone else thinks.

I like that old guy!  So would've my dad and uncles.

I own 357's, 41 mags, and 44 mags, and all will kill deer and bear, as well a heavily loaded 45 LC....love 'em all.
My Redhawk 44 mag was always My hunting weapon of choice for many a hunt, and it filled My tag most of the time.

One opening day, I decided to carry a 41 mag handgun, and although loaded for big game, the 41 cartridge failed to penetrate a small patch of brush which I'm sure My Redhawk would have. Never even touched the largest white tail that I've ever seen.

I never carried any other handgun ('cept My Redhawk 44mag) on a big game hunt again.
Go big and potent, because the ideal situation seldom presents itself.

I love them all, no really!!!  I have .357, .41, .44, and the .45 Colt.  I reload for all of them.  I have a Ruger GP-100 that I had thoughts of getting bored out to .41 mag.  Good thing I found this though:





Now I don't have to ruin my GP100.  But I did do an upgrade to it:





And I have taken it to the woods.  Didn't get any game, but did find it to be a great handgun to hunt with.  It will be with me next season and I am looking forward to it.


I think the idea of reloading for all of them is what makes my experience wonderful and fun.  It kind of makes it a total experience.

One thing I have found after hunting with my blackhawk since I was 19 is this. People either love it or hate it. Folks for yrs have tried to tell me how much better the 44 is over the 41. I'm not here to say it is. I just know it works for me. I've owned both and sold my 44 to buy my second 41 in a blackhawk hunter. Countless deer and hogs have died.
