A competition shooter friend has offered a "shot out" barrel for use in a project I am cooking up.  My plan was to build a 6.5x55 on a K98 frame with a 20 inch barrel for general use (coyotes, deer, ground hogs, etc).


His barrel (free) is chambered for 6.5-284 and has throat erosion after 1,200 rounds. I know I will need to trim off some of the chamber end but the question is how much??  Since I have no plans to shoot 3" groups at or beyond 1,000 I am confident I could end up with a good mid range shooter (1 to 1.5 MOA ) 


Should I plan to cut the entire chamber off, or would I be able to cut into the chamber and clean up the old 6.5-284 chamber with a 6.5x55 chamber??


Anyone ever do this?? Would I be better off with a new barrel ($100 - $250 depending)

Since even the shoulder diameter of the 284 chamber is considerably larger than the 6.5x55 I think you will end up having to lose the whole chamber. Best to consult with whoever is doing the threading and chamber reaming.

What could possible be done is to cut off enough of the breech side depending how far the erosion went into the barrel and re-chamber in 6.5/284

I think it all hinges on how much barrel remains after cutting off the breech end with the old 6.5x284 chamber. It may be possible that there will not be enough metal to thread and rechamber to 6.5x55. It just may be better to cut off an inch or so depending on the taper of the barrel and go with the origional chamber. Frank
