Fly fishing vests neccessities?
« on: March 18, 2012, 05:58:59 AM »
Starting to get into fly fishing and I'm slowly acquiring the equipment I think I need.  Any suggestions would be helpful on what all to get.  What I'm really wondering is what all do yall carry in your fishing vests.  I always see fly fishers wearing vests with 20 pockets that are bulging.  I have some flies, a reel and rod, hat, vest, waders, and wading boots.  Am I missing something or do people like to carry a lot of extra stuff?  Thanks in advance for advice and answers.

most carry too much junk.
find someone whos vest is not bulging and talk to him about a good basic fly selection.
my main tools were, leader straightener, nail clippers, forceps and a small 22 revolver loaded with snake shot.

That's about all the stuff I could think of.  I ordered a vest from cabela's.  I figured it would be nice not to have to carry my tackle box out there but wondered what on earth I was gonna do with the other ten or so pockets.

Little containers for flies. Can be mini tackle boxes, mint tins or snuff cans, really doesn't matter. A pistol for the snakes. A sharp little fixed blade or one hand open knife. Toilet Paper with the tube out, in a ziplock bag. Lunch. Forceps. One of those little reel up things that has a fly drier, eye buster and clippers on it. Tube of rtv sealant for waders. Needle threader for getting leader into the hook. A spool of florocarbon for leaders. That's 3 or 4. I don't know what you do with the rest. I think they carry 4 or 5 different types of line on cassettes to change out their reel. A few spare reels. All kinds of little tools orvis puts out and so on. I used to carry weighted line and floating. Now I just carry floating on the reel and split shot in the fly tin.

Thanks Bugflipper.  Half of the stuff you mentioned Im not even sure what it is, so I better get to learning more before I venture out there.  Plus it started snowing again so I may have to wait til that dies down more.

Sorry, here's a picture of the common tools. http://www.cabelas.com/product/Fishing/Fly-Fishing/Fly-Fishing-Accessories/Tools%7C/pc/104793480/c/104721480/sc/104339880/i/103893480/Cabelas-Streamside-Tool-Kit/753298.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Ffishing-fly-fishing-fly-fishing-accessories-tools%2F_%2FN-1100459%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_103893480%3FWTz_l%3DSEO%253Bcat104793480%253Bcat104721480%253Bcat104339880&WTz_l=SEO%3Bcat104793480%3Bcat104721480%3Bcat104339880%3Bcat103893480

You pin the little retractor thing on a vest. The nippers are the things that look like fingernail clippers. You cut the line with them. On the other side they have a point called an eye buster. If you use a popper or something similar that is painted, you push it in the hook eye to get the paint out. The key fob looking thing is a leader straightener. I use it to squeeze the water out of dry flies when they start to sink. It's just rubber on both sides. Squeeze them in between the flaps and blow on it after and you don't have to change to another dry fly while the first one dries out. You probably know what forceps are, but just tiny needle nose pliers used to get the hook out and to tie some knots. I keep the nipper and fly drier on the retractable thing, it keeps them handy. The forceps I keep on the front pocket of the waders where I can get it quick. Walmart usually has all of them together for a lot less than what I linked (without the tackle box).

A needle threader is. http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/yhst-96748182234973_2202_2344468064
You can get them at walmart as well in the arts and craft dept. The triangle shaped wire goes in the eye of the hook. Slide the line through the wire. Then pull back through the hook. Works very well for cold hands or weak eyes. It saves a lot of frustration when threading little hooks for me.

These are pretty handy if you change flies a lot. http://nicksgearreview.blogspot.com/2008/07/mustad-quick-links-aka-mustad-fly-clips.html

Over the years I have turned into a gear and gadget head. When I look back over those years, it seems I was happier with the little bit of stuff I started out with. No vest. Just an articreel with an outside zippered pocket. In that I carried one Perrine aluminum flybox with streamers and nymphs, and another small one with drys. Sometimes a snuff can with some loose flies of dubious origin. One or two extra tapered leaders and a small spool of tippet, (only one, only one size). Forceps cliped to the strap, a zinger pinned to it too, with a nipper attached and a net french clipped to the creel. Whatever else I decided to take, (like a knife), would fit in the pocket on the creel, or it didn't go. Back then I could drink out of the waters I fished. I don't go equipped for a safari anymore but I still wear a vest with some empty, or near empty pockets. Not too many trips I take call for a full vest. But they are handy,....And I do carry more 'stuff ' these days. But sometimes, I still go out with just the creel or whatever I can carry in the pocket on my waders. Don't sweat the small stuff, have fun and enjoy the water.

What does it tell you when some guys carry all they need to fish on one of these things?
Once you get past the neccessities, (which are few), it's just personal preference or personal needs. I didn't use to have to clip flip-up cheaters to my sunglasses until I was about 45yrs old.......... ;D

I appreciate all the feedback.  I thought I would be able to start getting out there soon, but we started getting snow again and its back down to zero degrees first thing in the mornings.  Guess I better  man up and do it anyway.  Can't wait to get out there and start learning by doing.  Thanks guys.

Flies, some extra tippet, some tiny shot, indicators, nippers and some forcepts will get me by in 90% of my fishing. The rest of my stuff is just pocket padding.  :o
