Green under water lights?
« on: June 12, 2012, 12:35:49 PM »
Anyone use green under water lights? Seems to be a growing trend. Bought a little semi v boat this spring. Put in front and rear decks and seats on post. Only using on electric motor lakes.

Since it is going to be a hot summer, we are starting to fish more at night. Across the web it appears people are useing green underwater lights more then the traditional floating white light. Looking at the prices out there, the only way I can swing it is to make them ;) .

Found some 12 volt, 5 meter light strips on the auction site for $25. They have 600 LEDs. Going to get some clear pvc and make the tube. here is a couple pics. One pic of the lights wrapped on a broom handle, other is 25 feet away right at dark 8)

Let me know what ya think. Notice in bottom pic. Upper left corner sky is still light. Not dark when the pic was taken ;)

Thanks
Lonny

Yesterday picked up 2" clear PVC. Stopped at Depot picked up some fittings. Got home and was shocked to find out the tubing fell in the fittings. Problem was the PVE measures OD. The normal PVC pipe is measured inside. To remedy this. I took a piece of 2" sch 40 pipe, glued it to the ends of the clear(fit perfect) then added fittings. Put a clean out fitting on top, it has power wire thru it and glued. Put a coupler on the bottom of the tube. put a small piece of cushion pad in to have a soft bottom for the light rod. Lights are wrapped around a piece of wooden dowl rod. Today I will add a piece of regular white PVC to the bottom. It will be where I add the weight to give me the bobber effect. Will be using a clean out fitting for the bottom. Here is what it looks like now. Hopefully get her in the water this weekend.

Did I mention I only have $47.50 in it so far? ;)

I have used the cylum sticks. They are green sorta, read about them in some sort of long line fishing in the ocean. Did me no good but no one was catching anything when I tried it. Pretty well forgot till reading this post.

We have used a couple times since built. It draws in plankton and minnows great. But have not really caught anymore fish than without it. When we use it with my 16ft semi-v. I hang it about midway down the boat. It sinks to the cap, then floats. It lights up about 5 feet off the bow and stern. About 10 feet or so off the boat side from the light. Not sure how deep it shines, wife will not go in and see ;D . One real benifit, if you leave couple inches of the light sticking out of the water, you can see your poles really well.
Now buddy who bought a premade one. Paid $150 for his. It has a 2ft flouresent tube(breakable) We compared them one night out. Mine is a little brighter ;) . He has decided when the bulb breaks(again) he will be switching to leds 8) . He used his back in the spring when the crappie were biting and said he noticed a big difference versus not using it. So when the crappie pick up again we will giver a try.

I have seen some of the smaller store bought ones. But the guys were using them out of the water on the sides of their boats. I guess didnt trust them to be water tight? I dont know.
