Does anyone else use a....
« on: January 16, 2004, 09:37:16 PM »
Am I the only one that uses a 30 cal on coyotes? Most of my buddies use either a 22-250 or 223, and I use my 300 RUM.
So what do all the yote hunters on here use?

Just sold my .223 for a .22-250.  I also use a .22 mag in close and carry a .40 Glock at times with my .22-250, though haven't been lucky enough to use it!!

Most of the time I use one of my .22 Hornets.  I see no reason for being so overgunned by using a .30-30(the smallest .30 cal I got) or a .30-06.  The Hornet is easier on the ears, hides and wallet.  A 1 lb. can of powder seems to last forever.  Lawdog

Actually in my case I dont see it as being over gunned at all. Where I hunt(mostly very large open hay fields) often times we simply cant get the dog much closer than around 300 yards, now that is not out of range for a 22-250,but factor in the wind and you have some problems.
Yeah it cost's a few more cents a round to reload and it definately makes more noise than the hornet, as far as the hides go, most of the yotes in my neck of the woods dont have the more desireable coats, but sometimes I run into a pack that does have nice fur and for those I dont shoot them at all, thats when the traps come out....

I use a .220 Swift with either Barnes Burners VLC 50 grainers or Hornady V-Max 50 grainers over 38 grains of IMR 4064 in Winchester nickel plated cases.  This does a number on the dogs, as a matter of fact day before yesterday I made a head shot on one with a V-Max, and (kinda graphic here) it dislodged the eyeballs from the sockets.  These are very accurate loads holding about .2 inch groups off sandbags on a calm day.

By the way, I used to use a 7mm Mag, and that got a little too punishing to be shooting at dogs, and the muzzle blast spooked the crap out of the cattle, horses, calves, etc.

Harry,

Don't you have anything smaller than a .30 caliber?  I have a .25-06 that bucks the wind just great even at ranges over 300 yards.  Since you are shooting at 300(+/-) yards I am guessing that you are using at least a .308 or in that area.  I think I would go with something like a .243 Win. to a .25-06.  Lawdog

Lawdog,
Yes I have a few small bores, the most prized of which is my 6mm rem, which I used exclusively on groundhogs and coyotes for years until my new best buddy came along. I still get sentimental and use it on occasion if the conditions are correct
I had a winchester m70 in 25-06 but it was not as accurate as I had hoped, that may have been due to the fact that it just didnt feel right to me.
Do you know if tikka offers a rifle in 25-06? I have been looking for a reason to buy on of these "wonder rifles" to see what has everyone whipped into such a froth :D

If you do not reload, I think you would be better served with a .22-250 or a .223 than anything else.  Wind drift only effects my .220 swift by a couple of inches at long distances.  Out here we have to shoot coyotes to protect cattle (our once a year paycheck), and we use whatever we have with us on coyotes, but we always have a high velocity .224 in the truck or tractor because the bullets only drop about 4.5 inches at 300 yards, and the wind dosen't effect them too much.  I would seriously consider nothing more than a .243 with light bullets for coyotes.

DirtyHarry,

Sorry, I can't help you with the Tikka.  They have one feature that keeps me from ever buying one.  Price isn't it.  Lawdog

Anything worth doing is worth over-doing 8)  I hunt the deep dark cedar swamps of northern lower michigan.
