Toddler found in Indiana field after tornado kills her familyBy Yahoo! News | The Upshot – 6 hrs ago        Indiana State Tropers survey damage to Henryville, Ind., Saturday, March 3, 2012. (AP Photo/Michael Conroy)
A toddler girl who was discovered in an Indiana field following Friday's devastating tornadoes is in critical condition at a Kentucky hospital, but she may be the only member of her family who survived.
Washington County Sheriff Claude Combs told ABC News that the girl was found in New Pekin, Ind. on Friday near the bodies of her 21-year-old mother, and her younger siblings. Reuters reports they were a 3-year-old brother and a 2-month-old sister. The body of a 20-year-old male was also recovered from the field but Combs didn't confirm whether he was the girl's father.
The 2-year-old child, whose injuries have been undisclosed, is being attended by one unidentified family member at Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville, Ky., said the hospital's chief of nursing, Cis Gruebbel, to ABC news.
After the child was discovered, she was first taken to a rural hospital in Salem, Ind. before being airlifted to the Kentucky hospital once she had stabilized. Melissa Richardson, a spokeswoman for St. Vincent Salem Hospital, told the Associated Press that authorities are trying to determine how the child wound up in the field, since her family lived about 10 miles south of where she was discovered.
Another dramatic rescue took place in Henryville, Ind., the birthplace of Kentucky Fried Chicken founder Col. Harland Sanders, which is about 10 miles away from Marysville
The twister approached right after the town's elementary, middle and high schools — which are all housed on the same campus — were dismissed early due to severe storm warnings.
Several school buses saw the tornado approaching and returned to school. According to NBC's Today show, 11 children on one of the buses made it into a school building just before the bus was thrown into another building. Several other empty buses were propelled hundreds of feet.
Glenn Riggs, the principal at Henryville Elementary School, told NBC's Today show that he and about 40 students and faculty found shelter at the school, lying on the floor of three small offices.
"There was like a decompression," Riggs said. "It felt almost like your skin was going to be peeled off your face and your ears popped. And of course people were a little upset — some of the children were upset."
"It was just crash, bang, break …" he said about what it was like when the twister struck. "We knew the school was going up around us, and then the ceilings began to fall apart, and it was like a dust in there for probably about a minute. And then it did stop."
Another school bus driver decided to pull over and ask a local resident to use their house to shelter the children.
"We got on the buses, we started heading to my house and the tornado was following us," one student said. "Luckily this woman was so generous to let us stay in her basement."
How to help tornado victims
Though the schools were almost completely destroyed, no injuries to either students or staff were reported.
The children who remained at the schools during the tornado were taken to the local Henryville community center, where they reunited with their parents.
The deadly storms, which stretched from the Gulf Coast to the Great Lakes, have killed at least 30 people in four states — Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio and Alabama — and destroyed two small towns in Indiana in the second deadly tornado to have occurred this week.

We were watching TV last night around 9:00 perhaps a bit later. They were doing a special on a tornado on the ground in our area that appeared to be headed right for us on the radar.

All of a sudden ferocious winds, rain and the worse hail storm I've ever been in hit. It was so loud on the metal roof I couldn't hear the TV even turned wide open. I walked out to the garage to look out the window and saw weird shaped hail stones as big as dimes falling. None were round or even close to it but rather were flattened and all mishapen with sharp edges.

We lost power for several hours. I don't know when it came back on but I woke up around 5:30 this morning to find it back on. I think Matt said he was wakened a bit after 3:00 when all the lights and fans came on.

It had been 80 degrees just a short while before the storm hit us and by midnight it was in the 40s and dropped even lower over night.

So far as I know the only damage here was a couple of screens on one side of the house that were shredded by the hail.

The tornado so far as I have been able to tell missed us a few miles but there had to be something over us for so much hail of such size to fall. Whatever it was I'm sure glad it was way up in the air and not down here on the ground with us.

I can relate to you GB. I grew up in Tornado alley, and we spent many nights and eve's in the storm cellar. We are for the most part, tornado free here in SW Oregon. My Brother still lives in SE Arkansas and said the cell of storms that hit you, missed them but did some damage in LA. Glad you folks made it though it with only minimal damage, and no injuries.    BG

She was found 6 miles south of me. As the story says, the rest of family died in the storm. This was one nasty tornado. Ran for about 35 miles. We were home and watching and waiting. Knock on wood, were not in its path. Daughters were down the road towards Henryville and seen it out the back door. But it was off in a distance, and not coming their way. I will try to post a pic they got. Also have pics of the baseball sized hail stones :o

Lonny,

That's some HUGE hail!
We're about 100 miles south of Louisville.
Marble sized hail with some ping pong ball sized hail mixed in.
Some places in the county had much larger hail with windows in houses broken and vinyl siding shredded.

I love the warm and early spring but this is the price to pay.
Just saw some snow flurries!

Took my generator over to some relatives today. They live in Otisco couple miles from Marysville. Had a bunch of dents in the yard the size of the hail stones posted above. One uncle lost a windshield and windows in a car and truck. Couple windows also took hits.

I drove by Henryville, as normal the news had it wrong. They said Marysville was gone, wiped out. Well I think they missed that one. Marysville had a lot of damage BUT no where near what they are saying. I will say the destruction from this storm will make me consider the basement a little sooner than normal. You can not get close to Henryville. But from the over head views on the news, that place is one huge mess. Major distruction.

I could not imagine what those folks are feeling today. :(

That's a real shame. I have a hard time hearing bad things happening to children. They are just so Innocent and precious. Dale

I remember a few years ago when a tornado hit a trailer park at Evansville Indiana. There was a lake behind it and they drained the lake to find all the bodies. POWDERMAN.  :( :(

The little one is with her family, now.  None of them will ever again know pain or sorrow.  This is a good thing.

Speaking of little ones......
