75 YEARS OLD!!!
« on: March 03, 2012, 04:51:45 PM »
Ive seen a lot of life, almost finished high school, spent 4 years in the service, raised 2 children have 14 grandchildren and 2 great grand children, have seen a lot of changes like automatic close wash machine and dryers, micro wave ovens jet planes men walking on the moon (so they say) have been lied to by school teachers, government and law enforcement. was once very prod of my country, but am seeing the down fall of a once GOD fearing GREAT country being taken over by greed and muslims and the American male is doing nothing.  very sad.
ps  I dont expect to see this post last long.

Happy birthday!
was once very prod of my country, but am seeing the down fall of a once GOD fearing GREAT country being taken over by greed and muslims and the American male is doing nothing.
Greed has always been around. Don't worry, Muslims aren't taking over the country, that's hogwash by people diggin' for votes and paranoid/ill informed. FYI.... Muslims are less than 1% of US population... them taking over should be the least of your worries.

Again, Happy Birthday!
Jesus said we should treat other as we'd want to be treated... and he didn't qualify that by their party affiliation, race, or even if they're of diff religion.

Well mrcooper, you've got a few years on me, but I"m still very proud of my country--not my country's government and not even my state's government.  I don't blame our beautiful country for the failures of all too many of its people in selecting liars, spendthrifts, drunks, drug addled idiots and communists to our legislative bodies and the Presidency.  That isn't to say that I believe all of our politicians are manifestations of the afore mentioned catagories, but at the moment the Senate and Presidency are controlled by that ilk.  I guess if the government is a reflection of the population, we are truly in trouble.  We'll know in November if there is still any hope at all.

Why?

BTW you have me by about 8 years. I've seen all those things too. Ya didn't mention outhouses and the only indoor plumbing being in the kitchen sink. We took baths in a #2 wash tub and had 20 yards to walk to the outhouse. Sat around listening to the radio for a lot of years before TV came. I remember when phones came to our area, everyone in the county  had a Adams prefix and a four digit phone number on the multi party lines.

I'm sure not proud of what has happened to our country and for sure not of the folks running it but that ain't the country's fault it's the fault of the folks who took GOD out of their lives and out of the country.

America is changing in more ways than you guys mention. Guess my greatest concerns are common use of alcohol & drugs by so many of our population. Even legal drugs are much abused IME. And the rise of Gangs in our cities.

A few years ago I along with other missionaries set up a tent camp for the youth of the yukon delta villages. It was on a tributary of the yukon river in remote western alaska. The first week about 40 pre-teens attended camp. A large majority were dressed like california gangbangers. After a few days of getting to know the kids, I asked some of them where they saw their fashion style, oh on TV was the answer. I asked where they bought their clothes and they said they ordered them by mail from JCPenny.... Fast forward 16 years and over 1000 miles away to southeast alaska indian village and just a few days ago I stepted out my front door and saw a young man walking down the street dressed the same way. The usual dress here is Helly Hansen rubber rain gear and Extra Tough rubber boots. I had never seen this guy before. Guess the gang bangers are invading our village.

I guess the alarming change I see is the rise of senseless violent crimes in our nation now days. While there are a lot of good honest, hard working folks in America. We as a nation have quit parenting our childern and instilling in them the fear of God and work ethics that made our nation great. I'm afraid this all ties in with the end times as written in scripture. Things will continue to get worse until Jesus returnes for his church. That event is what a wise man will prepare for...  ;)

Happy birthday, coop. You have me by six months so I've seen those changes also. Had it worse than Graybeard, the outhouse was about 100 yards away and never had a phone or TV until I was married and got my own.  ;D  We finally got electricity after I was in school for a couple of years. Then I learned how truly sorry kerosene lamps are for a light source.

I certainly can't think of any other country I would want to live in except this one but I'm dismayed with the direction it is going. As I look at the population I have no hope that it will improve either.

G.B. You brought back memories of the out house but you left out the split board and the door that would not shut and the holes in the roof so the snow could get in and yes thank god it was about 20 yards away from the house, as far as walking up hill both ways that was when I went to school that was 10 miles away and in the winter time the snow would get so deep we could jump over the tops of the telephone poles. and I had no shoes.

Just flat dirt. I did have to walk 3/4 of a mile to and from the bus my first year of school. It was flat dirt also and that distance wasn't anything to a kid. I had company because the neighbor had four kids that had to walk it too. That's been 67 years ago and it was an entirely different world. Heck, some of the city kids had to walk that far across town also.

As best as I recall the door closed just fine on ours and the roof didn't leak. Living in Alabama snow was not a concern. Still winter was plenty cold enough to suit me and going out there in winter or at night when there was but a single flashlight in the house and most times it didn't work was an adventure.

One moonless night I had to make the walk and in the process rammed by bare right foot into the frame of an old lawnmower someone had left out in the yard. Yeah prolly me. I have a scare over an inch long and fully a quarter inch wide to this day from that adventure.

We had another larger structure that held tools and feed for the hogs right behind the outhouse and it had a triple holer in it. I don't recall ever using that one tho it was what was used prior to building the newer outhouse used when I was growing up.

I reckon it was a bit less than a half mile but for sure over a quarter mile to Mechanicsville Elementary unless I cut across the field behind the house up to the school. I walked it daily round trip for six years and many days at lunch would run home eat then run back to be back in time. Then thruout high school days 7-12 grade I had an even longer walk up to the bus stop to go to Wellborn High School.

I well remember mom and granny washing clothes in the back yard in a wash tub and heating the water over an open fire in the yard in a large black cast iron pot. Some times a black woman came to help. They thought they were really up town with mom got a wringer washer that sat out on the back porch.

Toilet paper was a real luxury growing up. The outhouse had the sears catalogue and monkey wards, sometimes newspaper. I'll never forget the sound of the old wringer washer as it agitated, sloshing the clothes back and forth, sometimes sloshing water over the side if we over filled it. The walk to school was about a mile for 12 years. The school is where we met the bus for high school. Fathers worked, mothers stayed home raising the kids. I reckon we grew up in our own Mayberry and didn't even know it. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

Happy birthday.............but don't slow down, I'm right on your heels, I turn 72 in April.

Graybeard, I really feel sorry for all those that missed have a youth without an outhouse.  We had one at school and at Church.  I remember some of the pranks we pulled like catching a coon and putting it in the outhouse, or pouring turpentine on the toilet paper in the girl’s outhouse. (I got a good and likely well deserved beating for doing that, I don’t think Mom ever forgot.)

Powderman.  A lot of the folks didn’t have toilet paper; they used corn cobs to take care of the business.  There was usually a bushel basket of cobs, both red and white cobs…….do you know why and how they were used? ??? ??? ??? ???

Congradulations on your acheivement. Some folks never get the opportunity to attain this age.You are a few years ahead of me, but I also wonder where our country and the freedoms that we have know for so long are headed. In 1965 Paul Harvey had a commentary called The Devil that sure seems like a description of what we are experiencing today.I often wonder how Thomas Jefferson could see the future so clearly from his place in history.

First of all, Happy Birthday mrcooper.  Attended my last Family Reunion at the age of 28, right after I got married.

Yea, the outhouse sat behind the Smoke House and Wood Shed, about 60 yards from the house.  Dad decided to move it cause Mom was complaining about the smell.  So My Grandpa hooked up a team of mules and put skids under the outhouse.  He dragged it about 100 yards from the house, just over a rise to shield it from view from the house.  We did not get electricity till 1956, I was seven.  Rode to school on my Grandpa's school bus, I was one lucky kid to have a Grandpa who drove the school bus.  He always carried a Tobacco Stick next to his seat, for when those High School Boys got a bit unruley.

Raised my first and only crop of Tobacco at the age of 14 with a mule and a borrowed plow.  The day I had to top those plants, I swore if I survived I would never be a farmer, and I was going to leave Tennessee never to return to live.  I succeded on both points.  I'll be 63 myself in 19 days.  Guess I'm pretty lucky, I still ride my mountain bike into the hills. (I ride a bike cause I can't walk far).  Walk across raging mountain streams.  Ride a 4-wheeler 60, 70, miles from the highway, sometimes making my own trail.  Last night my hunting partner and I scheduled a two week float trip into the Brooks Range this coming September.  All for the sake of hunting.  Wife says I am going to have an accident or a heart attack one day and die out there.  At least I will go happy.  At that point GBs prediction will most likely come true, I'll become Bear Poo.  Still want to kill a Grizzly with my .17HMR.

I have one vice, I like to chase wild women.  My problem is the last one I caught, 33 years ago, has kept a tight reign on me ever since.  Made me promise to marry her before she would slow down enough for me to catch her.
Where is old Joe when we really need him?  Alaska Independence    Calling Illegal Immigrants "Undocumented Aliens" is like calling Drug Dealers "Unlicensed Pharmacists"
What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Sourdough.  If ya gotta go it’s best to go doing something ya enjoy.

I lost a very dear friend two years ago, at 70 years old; he died of a heart attack right after shooting a bull elk while hunting in Colorado.  For all the years we were friends I never knew him to miss a trip to Colorado for elk, there is no doubt in my mind, my friend Jerry died happy.
