Question for 7mm-08 Handi owners
« on: March 04, 2012, 04:57:25 AM »
For those of you that have one, has anyone slugged the barrel?
I'm looking at a group buy mold on castboolits, I don't own my 7mm-08 yet, its still on layaway so I cant slug it.
I realize there is going to be a certain amount variation from barrel to barrel.
The mold in question has a bore rider diameter of .277"
So, whats your bore diameter?
 TIA
Jim

Pete, the SAAMI spec for the 7mm-08 bore diameter(lands) is .277",  groove diameter is .284", tolerance is +/- .0005" for both.  ;)

Pete, bore rider bullets are smaller in diameter up front than the shank of the bullet so when the round is chambered the forward section of the bullet is actually riding in the lands before it's fired, only the rear section of the bullet is groove diameter,  that's why Jim wants to know if the 7mm-08 will chamber a .284" bullet that has a .277" bore rider profile.  ;)

Jim,

I got a brainstorm and dropped a .277" bullet down the bore of one of my 7mm-08s, it dropped right thru, measured it and it was .276"  :-\, tried all six that I have and they all measure .276" with my digital caliper!   ??? So that wasn't much help, so I found a small egg sinker and slugged one of the barrels at .277", not micrometer accurate, so accuracy is questionable considering the SAAMI tolerance and all. Prolly doesn't make much differnce what my barrels slug, each barrel is different and will depend on when a barrel is made and how old the tooling is when it's made, it could have a .2755" bore or .2765" or anywhere in between.

quickdtoo,
thank you this is what I was needing to know. My 280 rem barrel measures exactly .277 & .284, but that barrel cost more than
an entire handi  ;D and is on a custom Mauser 98.

I'm going to order the mold, cause I can use it in the Mauser, and, I'm sure I will be able
to make it work in the Handi, especially considering, I just ordered "The Paper Jacket"  8)
