The year of frustration with my Buffalo Classic
« on: March 09, 2012, 03:46:13 PM »
I finally solved the mystery or is that misery of my BC. It turns out that it likes 340 grain bullets, but detests anything weighing 405 +. I tried different diameters and hollow base, but it loved to fling them downrange in a twirling flight.

I can now work on the most accurate load.

My BC likes the Lee 340 but loves the 460gr paper patched boolit. Mine does not shoot the 405's very well either.

My BC will not stabilize lead bullets less than .459".  You would need to slug your bore to verify what diameter lead bullet your gun needs.  A lead bullet should be slightly larger than your bore diameter.   Maybe you have a overbore and need a really large diameter bullet?  Also, would hurt to measure your barrel's twist rate (it is in the FAQs) as sometimes H&R ships  a barrel with the wrong twist for caliber.

On the BC I did slug the bore. Discovering that .457 would not work, tried the .459 HB, then tried the Ranch Dog 425 gr sized to .460 still went through target sideways. Took some 340`s sized .457 and tried them out of desperation and they shot good. Went home puzzled, measured twist, it was 1 turn in 20. I can shoot the lighter bullet and end the madness, I was losing sleep on this. This barrel has very shallow rifling.

My Ruger #3 and my Sharps carbine really like that 340 Lee bullet.  I'd like to have a Lyman 330HP Gould Mold # 457122.

The Lyman 457122 just happens to be the bullet I'm gonna try in the Trapper, it's one of Paul Matthews favorite bullets!  ;)

Yep, Lyman gould is next on my list to buy molds.  ;)  Gonna get a flat top pin also to make a solid.  ;)

I have that mold in an HP model. I use 33.5 gr of IMR 4198, I have some 1" groups with the Ruger #3, have not worked with the BC that much yet. The Lyman 385 gr RN shoots very well out of the BC so far, using 32 gr of 4198. The #3 has killed many deer , out to 178 yards as the longest shot.

I have that mold as well, and have loaded some of these for hog hunting.  They are very accurate in my 22" Handi, and in hard cast should do a number on the piggies.
