357 mag
« on: February 17, 2012, 07:59:39 AM »
Was looking to kill some time and walked into Dicks SG.  I rarely go there but I'm glad I did.  I noticed a 44 mag synthetic and saw the price at 259 and got to talking with someone that actually knew what he was talking about.  He mentioned they could special order anything from their book, so I decided to take a peek.  357 and 44 handis synthetic 22" no sights, scope rail--219.00.  I ordered one before they changed the book.  That seemed far better than any other price I have seen them at.  Now just have to find the right scope/ring combo for it.

Nice price.
I have a dot sight on my .357, a Trijicon Reflex. That way there's no scope in the way of the chamber and no need for a hammer extension.  Will probably go with an Ultradot on my other Handi.

well not sure I can afford a trijicon right now, but looks nice on yours.  At 219 each I may have to go back and get a 44 now.

Yeah, I hear ya'. I bought my Reflex used in 2000 for $225, and I'm not expecting to find another for the price. I was thinking an Ultradot red dot might be the way to go for your .357 (and my .45 Colt carbine). About $175 and they come with rings.

Great price. For a scope, you might look at a shotgun low power scope. Just put one on my .308. Sets just in front of the hammer. Not fired it with it on there yet, but I think I am going to like it. I prefer the 4 or 6 power scopes, I don't normaly shoot further than 100 yards.

You know you bought that Handi- because 1.) you wanted the caliber and 2.) the price was right (read that ECONOMICAL).  You are currently thinking of placing some glass on it and considering glass that will cost as much or MORE than the rifle itself.  Now that doesn't read "economical" anymore.  Besides, you are not going to make a 1,000-yard tactical shot with the 357 Mag Handi-.  Japan makes some very good glass, most of it anyway.  Weaver K-Series Classic 6x38 Dual-X Matte Scopes for $129 look good and perform very well on 4 of mine.  Weaver is owned by ATK and the scopes are made by Light Optics Works, considered to be an excellent Mfg of optics.  The attached photo may look it, but the glass doesn't overpower the rifle.

I put a 4x Simmons on my .357 Handi barrel.  I figured any higher magnification would be gilding the lily.  I got it from Dick's Sporting Goods.  Admittedly it's not a top quality scope but, for all that, it's very clear and I have done well with it on the range to 100 yds.  You do have to use the hammer extension with this combo but it's already on the receiver anyway as it's needed for my other barrels.  I had hoped to try for a deer with it this past season but never saw a legal one when I had this gun.

I have a bunch of Handi's and have scoped them with various different scopes.  One of the best I've found for a hunting scope (in my area) is the 4x32 weaver classic shotgun scope from natchez.  Mounts low on the gun and has excellent optics.  Parallax is set at 100yds the same as any high powered rifle scope.

I have had excellent performance using the Centerpoint 2-7x32 for $68 from Walmart.

They use the Centerpoint brand on many air rifles with good results. Most people have no idea that an air rifle is actually more punishing to a scope that the large centerfire calibers.

I have mine scoped with redfield revoltions 2-7x33 with weaver quad lock rings. The redfields are moderatley priced. Made in Oregon. They are shockproof, fogproof, and waterproof and come with lifetime warranties for about 145 to 155 bucks if you look hard enough. Glass is made by Luepold to boot. My opinion, but just about the best bang for the buck in optics right now. My other choice would be an entry level Nikon. I have never had an issue with either Redfields nor Nikons. Others I would buy if I could find a good deal are Weaver and Leupold.

I have my Handi .357 setup for both, a red dot and a scout scope (Weaver), using QD rings on a picatinney rail.

I actually just put a Centerpoint 4x32 on my newly purchased .22 hornet.  Came with a refurb Titan I bought, but I wanted a better scope with AO for the shorter ranges of the airgun. The parallax is set to 35 yards on it, but focus was poor at that range, it is more crisp at 100. Parallax can be manually adjusted by removing the front bell ring and screwing the lens in or out accordingly.

This is a great scope for the price (on sale for $47.99 + free shipping, from Optics Planet).  The 4.5x power provides as much magnification as you need for this caliber.

I bought one of those scopes at the local Dicks Sporting Goods for $39.99 to put on my 10/22.  They had to order it but took less than a week to get it.  Good scope for the money in my opinion.  Thinking about another one for my Handi 30-30 but it shoots 3 shots in a 4"circle at 50 yards with the peep I have on it now so I might keep her as she is now.

Use any of the inexpensive rings, Tasco, Simmons, or get the Weaver rings.  The .357Mag has no recoil to speak of in a Handi.  IIRC I think you need high rings.  The Weaver rings go for about $9 - $10, you can pick them up in Wally world.

Get med. and high and use the lowest that will clear the barrel, then mod the hammer if you have to, otherwise your cheek will likely be too high off the stock. If you get them at W-Mart it is easy to return the pair that doesnt 'work', but please be careful of the packaging for the next guy.
