1965 Model 70 .225

Hey guys. I'm usually over in the H&R shotgun forum, but yesterday I picked up a new rifle.
 
It's a 1965 Model 70 in .225 caliber. It has an Unertl 10x scope. The gun came with 100+ empty casings and 60 reloads. The previous owner also has a box of bullets, primers, and the reload dies which I will be buying next week or so when I go back to buy all of his reloading equipment and supplies and possibly his post 64 M94 30-30.
 
The rifle is in good shape, but he did use it for varmit hunting. The scope also works great. Boy is this gun heavy! I had never held a M70 before now, plus this version has a bull/heavy barrel. I paid $700 for it with all the ammunition and brass. Did I do ok? I don't plan to sell it, I will shoot it. Not sure I will do too much hunting with it though.

Since the scope would bring a minimum of $350 by itself, I'd say you did just fine.

Great. Thanks for the reply. Since I posted this I started to research the scope a bit. Looks like it was a great scope in it's day. Also seems that I will have to look hard for new ammo, to compliment the reloads I have.

The ammo is still out there but getting harder to come by and higher all the time.
Better get that extra brass now if you want anymore because Win is no longer going to make it and I don't think anyone else does either.
I have plenty of each.
I have both the Win model 70 standard barrel and the varmint barrel along with a Win model 670 in 225.
I also have a custom built Rem model 30 S EXPRESS with a 28" Pacnor #5 med sporter barrel I had done years ago.
I also have a H&R that has been re-chambered to 225.
It is just an average shooter with factory ammo.
Never really found a load that it liked all that well.
Never used the 670.
The standard barrel will out shot the varmint barrel about any day of the week.
My custom will put 5 under a dime at 100 if you do your part.
The only factory load made was Win 55gr SPs.
Try some Sierra 52 gr HPBT bullets.
Never tried any other bullets in them.
Mine seems to really like them.
It is a fun caliber and it is just a tad behind the 22-250 velocity wise.

I'd sell the scope and get a good one.  There's lots of brass available.  Great cartridge.

I just bought 100 brand new Winchester brass for $50
 
Now I just need to get a few more components so that I can load them. The guy I got the rifle from came down and dropped of a Lee Loader for .225. It is a hand loader, definitely from the era of the gun, but looks new. He told me he reloaded 150 rounds for the gun since he bought it! (in 1969!) There are 100 or so empty casings, which makes me think he probably only put 250 rounds or so through the gun.

I have one I bought new in 1968, it was my coyote gun for many years, I killed a lot of dogs with it, today she is mostly a safe queen as I now use a 22-250 or .223 for dogs..  There is still plenty of ammo available for it, check auctionarms web site, also check Midway, they have it in stock.   

It sounds like you made a good deal on the gun, I’m sure you will enjoy it.

Midway is out of stock right now... at least they were a week or 2 ago when I checked last. I get a notification when they have it back in stock.

I am in the Buffalo, NY region. With the 100 new brass, I should be good on reloads. Would be nice to get a couple boxes of factory loaded ammo some day, but I'm not in a hurry.

   I had a Savage in 225. Good shooting rifle. Killed a lot of woodchucks with it. Sold it to my father in law. He later gave it to a guy that did some work for him on his hunting camp in PA. The guy that ended up with it used it for deer. The last i talked to him he said he had killed a few deer with it.
  Have to ask Marksman. Where at in the Buffalo area?  I am about 35 miles north of Buffalo.
  Not one darn thing wrong with that scope either. I had one just like it on my Rem. 40X target rifle.

Being in Buffalo won’t help, but just for kicks check out this auction:  When it opens go down and click on Estate Auction - V.T. Vernon McDougal.  He has a large collection of guns and ammo for sale. Its about a three hour drive for me but I intend tobe there and see if I can "steal" something.

I am in Pendleton. I like the scope! I won't be using the gun for anything more than a good time anyways. No need to go overboard buying new scopes or radical things like that :-)
 
Rockbilly - Thanks for the link! If my elders taught me anything, it was to never stop learning. I learn something new everyday, and plan to keep packing it in!
