Moving Heavy Equipment
« on: March 10, 2012, 06:46:57 PM »
I see trucks moving loads like this up the Haul Road (Dalton Highway, Alaska Ice Road) during the summer.  So far the largest group was Three Kenworths in front pulling.  And another one in the rear pushing.  I sure would not want to be the guy in the back pushing.  While this is not in Alaska I do believe it is in Canada.

Someone is contemplating making serious money through that equipment; by and through the production rate at which it operates.  What work is being done that needs equipment so large?  The Transmission, front end, and engine could have been separated to reduce this load.  That's a lot of wheels on the ground in support of balance and load sharing.  The shoulders of the roadway are not constructed as stiffly as the driving lanes.  Using all of the roadway width, while convenient, is bad if the individual tire load is greater than the shoulder construction can carry.

The Tar Sands in Canada.  There are several videos of these loaders and larger ones loading hugh trucks at the Tar Sands area.  This is a mining area, not an oil well.

The loader buckets hold 54 yards I seem to remember.  Can't remember the weight.  Two things I remember about the trucks right off the top of my head is that the tires on the trucks are 13 feet tall, and when the bed is extended for dumping it is 50' tall.  The fuel tank holds 1,000 gallons, and it burns a gallon a minute on average during the shift.

Just think it takes fuel to mine, lots of fuel.  China is also doing this type of mining on a large scale.  India is also.  Wonder why fuel is going up in price world wide?  And Obama refuses to let us drill, saying we can not drill our way out of this problem.  Our leaders have been saying this for 30 years.  If we had continued drilling 30 years ago we would not be in this mess.

Isn't there a show on the history channel or one of the others about hauling?
I've seen the commercials, but never watched it.

I used to be hooked on the Ice Roads show.
