Finished my broadfork and wrung it out today.
« on: March 15, 2012, 10:25:26 AM »
I finished the broadfork I was working on today. It is mostly a plumbing job. The base is 1 1/4 pipe 28" long with elbows on each end then reduced to 1" pipe for the handles. I drilled the elbows and pinned the joint that would turn in use.

I drilled the base for 5  12" tines they ended up about 6 1/2 " apart. The tines were old dump rake teeth that had a curve, I welded them where they went through the pipe top end only so I didn't spoil their temper. They aren't even a full 1/2 " they are closer to 7/16" dia.

Took her out in the garden and worked some ground. I could only get the tines in about 10-11" I think the ground is froze below that yet. I stabbed it into the frost pretty hard and dug some of the semi frozen stuff up. The tines showed no sign of bending.

This one is going to my son. The tough Nebraske clay and sod will be the real test.

Sorry Winters, I'm pretty much computer illiterate. The tool is basicly a U with the arms about shoulder width apart and shoulder height the bottom of the U has a set of tinespointing down. You jab these in your dirt and just rock the arms back to loosen your soil.
Easy to use, it dosen't really dig it just loosens. Google broadfork to find out more than you ever wanted to know about them

glad it works for you, I am still trying to talk myself into buying one(since I'd have to buy pieces and a welder to make one anyway)  just cant seem to win that argument, bought an old tractor instead.
