First hand reports needed ------------
« on: February 22, 2012, 11:38:34 AM »
Afternoon all,

A friend has just seen  the new Calala's "shooting" catalog and is interested in the current listing of the F.LLI Pietta, "1873 Single Action Revolver" being offered.

Of course, Cabela's says it is the equal of the RUGER, which I question, so looking for first hand user reports on this brand of hand guns.

Have seem so many so so and poor quality replicas from off shore makers, that I fear
Bob is likely to be wasting his hard earned bucks on junk.

Thanks for any info you can supply.

Keep em coming!

That would probably be the single action cattle man or one of it's adjascent models.  Looks a lot like the bisley style ruger and has a very similar frame:

n your post you say it is a Pietta, which is another brand of Italian firearm.  I have had good luck with a couple cap and ball Piettas, but have not expreience with their cartridge guns.  I would rather have a Ruger, but ymmv.

Pietta and Uberti are two totally different companies just as Ruger and S&W are. I've owned several Uberti guns and quality of all has been high but all hit way left of POA and with no adjustable sight and no local gunsmith who knows how to correct it I was dissatisfied with them for that reason only.

I've owned only a couple of Pietta guns and was not happy with them. Personally I'd suggest Uberti if you want an imported Colt Clone or just get the Ruger and have a stronger gun plus if ya like (I do) then you can have an adjustable rear sight or with the Vaquero just a groove for a rear sight like the Colt guns.

My bad I don't know why but it was the frontier from Cimmaron which is a pietta reseller.  8(  They don't have pictures up yet.

Cim. specs their products, and the build level to meet them, and are one of the best in terms of keeping 'their' manufacturers on the ball. I echo what GB has to say 100%; Ive had Pietta's and Uberties and the average U has been considerably better than the average P, so much in fact that I wont buy another Pietta unless its dirt cheap and I wont expect much.
BTW, my Uberti made, sold by Cabela's 'Millenium' Colt '73 clone had a matte black finish (since polished off and cold blued; looks pretty good), but the mechanicals are nicely timed, the trigger tuned up quickly and it shoots pretty well to the sights.

I bought a pair of consecutive # ones when Pietta first introduced their 1873 models. I want to say late 90's.  Paid around 650 bucks shipped. I thought they were pretty good guns myself at least compared to what was available at the time. Pietta was pretty well know in European countries for making good weapons. Mostly just black powder stuff over here until the cowboy shooters got rollin good. Then they decided to make their copy of the Colt SAA and get in on some of that action.  Made their own tooling, nothing to do with Uberti. Have no idea what they're like today, but would suspect they're still pretty good. My opinion of the "clones" is that Cimmeron is probably the best finished, EAA Bounty Hunter is probably the strongest.

Not sure if my friend has made the buy yet, but I believe he was moving that way.
