45/410 barrel
« on: March 14, 2012, 04:07:36 PM »
How do these barrels work?  Are they any good for shooting or just good for survival situations?

Let me preface my remarks by noting that I do not have one, so my opinion is unencumbered by relevant experience. You may wish to value accordingly.

Here are the issues in my opinion (again, for what it's worth). 1) Freebore. That's a fairly big jump for a 45  cal bullet, so I would imagine it may be hard to stabilize bullets, with cast bullets it may cause distortion and further aggravate accuracy, and I would think it could lead to more rapid throat degradation. 2) 410 patterns are tricky enough from a smoothbore, now you've got shot spinning down the barrel in the shotcup (that's smaller in relative diameter than it would be in most smoothbore barrels) and then hitting a short internal/flush choke before exiting. I can't imagine what kind of patterns it will give you beyond 10 yards.

I imagine it would be only slightly more useful than a Taurus Judge, in as much as it has some heft and could be effectively used as a club.

Now a swap barrel set in 357 Max and 410 or 20ga. would do it all and do it right.

They can be made to shoot well. It takes a combination of reloading tips, techniques and some good luck. I really have no idea why H&R still offers this barrel. There are several other offerings available that do a better job. One of which, the 45LC, has been discontinued. ???

Thanks, Dinny

Is the choke built-in or screw-in?

I have 2 of them that I had tapped for a scope.  They both would shoot mnute of orange at 50 yards.  I do reload for them, so I was able to mess with a load to get it to shoot.  I took the scopes off and use them for bird hunting early in the season.  I shoot 3" reloads in them and get good enough groups out to 25 yards to put most grouse on the ground if I do my part.

The choke is a screw in that is actually a straight rifled desgn that stops the wad and shot from spinning.  It does have a significant constriction, so it doesn't pattern all that bad.

I had one, tried the 45 colts out to 15 yds and gave up ! most were sideways ! It did shoot slugs very well, and deadly on tree rats! It's 20 ga. replacement was much better.

The choke tubes are identical to the contenders and the tool is stamped TC.  I got replacements from Desert Eagle, as their similar pistol uses the identical choke tube and tool as well.

I toy wit the thought of getting an additional 410 barrel, but these kill pleanty of birds, so I can't justify it.

Dont know yet but I just got the Rossi single shot handgun ( nicegun, well fitted) Has the 2.5 in chamber. Found on you tube a video of a man using 45 acp with rubber O rings in a Camanche single shot  If I get time sat. I will give it a try using 30-06 brass 30-06 brass is 2.5 inchs long.  fire form some and make a straight wall case Hope it will work on till I can find some 7.62x74 brass to fire form and cut down
