new 870 problem-help
« on: November 29, 2010, 05:23:20 PM »
i just got a new 870 express super mag and i have a problem with the gun not extracting shells when i pump it. i have only shot maybe a 100 rounds through it. and the only time i have had problems is with kent fast steel 3'' 3s when i went duck hunting the last couple of times. but when i went up to the range to shoot trap i had no problem with estate 2 3/4'' 8s. maybe the kents are expanding to much in the chamber and my extractor is having a hard time or i need to get my chamber polished idk help me out!

Make sure your pumping the action all the way back quickly. Many new to the 870 action have the same problem until they get used to it.

I had the same problem with a new 870 express and after a couple of weeks I traded it off for a new browning and never looked back.  A quick search of this problem online and you will see that its not just you its the gun.  I have been around shotguns all my life and know how to operate them.  My express did not want to extract at all.  I had to hold the forearm and slam the but on the ground to action it.  I own a wingmaster and have never had a single problem with it.

The Remington 870 is about the most proven pump shotgun around.  I have trained hundreds of officers in its use, with few problems.  "Short shucking" the action can lead to a jam, but not the issue you seem to be having.  If the Kent load is the only load you are having problems with, then that points to that load.  Maybe the shell rim is undersized?  If the shell is sticking in the chamber (but other makes are not), that also points to the particular shell.  It is possible the extractor springs are weak, but I doubt that is the problem on a gun with 100 rounds thru it.  Might want to switch to a different brand shell and see what happens, chances are it will be reliable as it is with your other loads.

A common problem with the 870 super mag is a tight chamber, the chamber will need to be polished out a bit, expecially if using winchester ammo. I work on remingtons every day and this is a easy 2 minute fix
