heavy loads in 44 Mag for your Handi
« on: March 08, 2012, 03:19:01 PM »
Just pick up a 44 Mag barrel and want to load up for it. ;D
Most of you just stick with 185gr-300gr in the 44 Mag Handi rifles and do you shoot heavier loads.

The twist rate is kinda slow for the heavy stuff. If I recall correctly it's 1 in 38. I shoot 240gr. XTP's out of mine and it's very accurate.

Here is a target with holes punched with Beartooth 355 gr. hardcast and H110 shot at 100 yards.

Nice grouping!  Did you chrony that round and what diameter was the bullet (Illion barrel or older?)?   I can't read all your writing on the target.

I have not put this load over a chony, although I have one that I haven't used in years. Maybe I'll do it this summer. The bullets are sized .432 and are propelled by 19.8 grs. of H110 in Midway cases. The barrel was purchased in 2006 as an accessory barrel. I have yet to kill anything with it. Maybe this fall.

Cheers,
Jeff

What kind of groups do you get with the 240gr XTP's?

444 Marlin are 1:20", 44mag is 1:38" unless someone can prove otherwise, that's the SAAMI spec twist for the 44mag, I have a 2010 or 2011 44mag, it's 1:38".

All you can do is try to push heavier bullets as fast as possible to stablize em.  Some barrels seem to work better than others with hevy bullets.  OR, get a 444 Marlin barrel, yes it's that damn good.  DP
