SB-1 conversion to .357 max
« on: March 19, 2012, 07:38:14 AM »
Hey guys,

Has anyone done this? I have a Handi in .357 (SB-1 frame) and wonder if it's safe to do the conversion.

Yep, I have fired many "book" max loads and no problems at all.

Yup, that's been asked hundreds of times before and answered in the FAQs, spend some time reading there.  ;)

I know the 357 mag to max is fine on a sb1 but what about a 44mag to 445 supermag on a sb1?

That's a big negative in my book.

..... what about a 44mag to 445 supermag on a sb1?

That would be questionable, some of the 445 data is beyond what would be considered safe on the SB1, it's up there with or above 444 Marlin pressures which is definitely not for the SB1.

The SAAMI limit is 40,000 psi compared to 36,000 psi for the .44 Magnum. Not a huge increase.
The .445 is a handloaders cartridge and a handloader does not need to load to the full max pressure. Even if one were limited to a maximum pressure of 36,000 psi the larger .445 case would generate about 200 fps more at the same pressure as the .44 Magnum.
