Question on a Grizzly
« on: January 29, 2004, 05:29:19 AM »
Now understand I don't really follow the subject of four wheelers that closely so don't stay up on them. My one and only is a Honda Recon bought used.

But the other day a fellow who was helping us move Matt's computer store to the new location mentioned he had a friend in TX who came into an almost as new Grizzly. Claims best he recalls maybe 10 hours on it. The guy bought it and a trailer for $7000 in some kinda deal. He really only wanted the trailer which as I understand was worth nearly that much by itself. So the guy thinks maybe the Grizzly can be had cheap as the current owner has no use for it.

So on to the questions. I noticed Yamaha makes a Grizzly which is their top of the line model and is a 660. Is this the ONLY Grizzly or does someone else make one by that name? Is this likely what  the guy has? Comments on it. Good? Bad?

I've not yet heard back from him so don't know if it is even still available or if so at what price.

I have a 2001 600. The 660 came out in 2002. The 660 have a lot of upgrades from the 600, bigger motor -4 wheel independent suspention amoung them. There were a few early modles that had defective C V joints but ubderstand were replaced by dealer.  Auto trans and button to shift from 2 to 4 wheel drive.

I have a 2004 Grizzly 660 and I have to say it is a heck of a machine. They have most of the problems they had in '02 and '03 fixed now and the thing is unreal. Lot of upgrades since the 600's for sure. Probably one of the best riding and best set-up atvs out there. I have always been a Honda man myself but after getting a hold of this Grizzly I am addicted. I promise my next atv will be a yamaha grizzly most likely (the only other thing I would get is a Yamaha Rhino).

As has been stated already, the pre 02 which is 600 c.c.  is a totally different machine than the 02 and newer with the latter being more refined.  Either work well and I would think you would be happy with either but the 02 and newer is truely a step above.  As far as value goes. all I can do is give you an idea of prices around here.  The 600 Grizzly in average to good condition would run $3,000 to $3,500.  An 02 660 in average to good condition $4,500 to $5,000 and 03s and 04s going up in value accordingly.

As I've said here before, I'm a Kawasaki fan, but on my last purchase the Grizzly 660 was my next choice.  Either way, it's amazing what you can do with these new big bores, both work and play.

Thanks for the help so far. So then the Grizzly name has been used by Yamaha for some time now. Guess that means if he calls I'll need to know which model year and engine size it is. I was just assuming since he was under the impression it has only about 10 hours time on it that it was brand new. I really had expected to hear from him before now. That might mean the guy has already sold it.

My Grizzly is a 2000, 600cc version.  Ipaid $4500 for it last summer with 650 mules on it if that helps.  They are great machines, one of the best rated four wheelers year after year.  I also have a Recon.  Those two are like the big and the small of it.  If riding in tight woods the Recon is more fun.  If doing some work the Grizzly is great.  Glad I have both.

If you can buy a Grizzly 660 in EXCELLENT condition and low miles for LESS than $5500 you have found a BARGAIN!! I've been watching e-bay and on-line dealers for several months and have talked to several salesmen form different dealerships. Everything i've read and heard about the Grizz 660 is that it is a SUPER machine...buy it NOW!!!

GB, as far as I know Yamaha is the only one making a quad named Grizzley.  I don't really even remember one from long ago with that name, so it should be one of  the Yamaha models everyone is talking about.   Yamaha kinda uses the bear theme when naming their atv's, kodiak, big bear, bruin, grizzley etc..  They are great machines for sure.

Actually I think it started out as a bear thing but then they ran out of different names for bears. Now Yamaha is more of an animal thing with other quads like Wolverine and the newest addition of the side x side Rhino. Don't know what happened with the warrior and banshee but O well.

O and I almost forgot about the little bear tracker. I think they called it that in reference to the fact that if you buy one you will always be tracking the big boys down because you couldn't keep up lol.

Thanks for the info guys. Deal didn't happen. Turned out the guy who owned it didn't really want to part with it that bad after all. He was asking $5500 for it. Not the bargain I had been led to believe it might be.

As far as I'm concerned you caught a break.  Unless the Yamahas have improved their product in recent years, you can't give me one.  Horrendous brake problems, cheap and poorly designed handle bars, cheap and poorly designed levers and a machine that weighs a ton.  Rough riding and poor gas mileage.  At work I used everything from the lowly Yammy 230 cc 2 x 4, the Grizz and the Kodiak.  Finally our outfit bought Honda 350 and no one would touch the Yamahas again.  I've probably got close to 1000 hours on the Yamahas in all types of conditions and the only thing good I can say about them is that they have a decent motor.

I think you must have been riding a Polaris or something. Yamaha is a good atv and all the things you are saying are not true of the Yamaha's. As far as the brake problems Yamaha mostly uses disc brakes while Honda still uses drum brakes, I do have to correct you on this because disc brakes last about 100 times longer in mud, water, sand, etc. As far as the handlebars I don't know what you are talking about...I have a buddy that flipped over his Timberwolf and it rolled three times and did not do much more than bend the handlebars a little bit, but then again what quad can you flip over 3 times and not damage the handlebars?? Rough riding??? I am sorry but I own a Honda atv and a Yamaha atv and the Honda rides like crap compared to the Yamaha. Gas mileage I will give to you because the Yamaha does drink alot of gas.

The Honda 350 rancher is a good bike I will give you that but the Yamaha's just offer more and have more. Honda is one of those companies that are kinda behind the times now being that they still don't offer things like low range and true 4wd. Until the Honda's get their problems worked out and catch up with everyone else I will continue buying the Yamaha's and other brands. As far as the Rancher goes though it is just a poor imitation of trying to copy and improve on the 300 fourtrax which in my book they did a poor job of.

If you really want to know what is junk then go buy you one of those new Honda Rincons.

I've got a 2002 Grizz and I have about 1800 miles on it with only one torn boot that I had to fix. Iride this thing hard through everything and it just begs for more. I've crossed rivers that were rack deep and the belt performed perfectly.   I've seen alot of new one's priced in the trader mags. from 6000 to 6300 out the door with a  farm no.
I've also got a 2004 Polarius my wife rides and it's nowhere as fast as the Grizz.  I ride the mountains of eastern Okla. and go to New Mexico usually 2 times a year to ride, so it sees a lot of rough use.  Digger
