.280 rem loads w/ Barnes TSX
« on: August 07, 2012, 04:01:15 AM »
Hi Folks,

I want to work an Elk load for my .280 and was wondering if anyone had loads for the 160gr Barnes TSX. I currently have some 4350 but I could other powder if needed.

 Thanks in advance!

I don't load for that round but H-4350 should work just fine. Check the Hodgdon site if you need load data.

Might I suggest you try the Barnes 140 TTSX instead of the 160? You will gain more in velocity and still shoot through any elk in the mountains! I like the Hogdon Extreme powders for the mountians, and either H4350 or H4831 work great in the 280 and that long 140 TTSx. I shot the 140 TTSx in a 7mm RUM even. The 160 is very long and "might" do better on big bear/moose than the 140. I like the Speer 160 HotCor bullet in a .280, but, of course it is shorter than the Barnes 160. Good luck to you whatever you use, that .280 is a great round. BTW, I only gained 50 fps when I had my 22" barrel .280 reamed out to the Ackley Improved. It really needs, and shines, with a longer barrel, say 24". I am an Ackley freak, ha, pay no attention unless you are wierd and into some form of wildcatting, ha.

160 grains is a GOOD all-around weight for the .280 (and 7mm in general!).
I usually use Nosler bullets exclusively, and would have no qualms using 160 grain Accubonds or Partitions for anything in the Rocky Mountains where I normally hunt (160 grains at @2800 or so is more than plenty for a flat-shooting pronghorn home-load, along with elk and LR mule deer).

The .280 is an outstanding round! (as is the .270Win), and either work well with H4350, but esp with H4831 and H4831SC.

As for TSX slugs or anything else, use what you have confidence in.  I've seen hunters thread some incredible shots when they've had confidence in themselves, their rifles and their ammo!
