a source of lead....

i was in a reloading shop and noticed a bag of 6 shot and was wondering if anyone use this to cast conicles???

IMO it would be too hard.  You need to get as close to pure lead as possible.

ive not checked it lately but shot used to be around 1 dollar a lb here maybe more. look on ebay, there were some guys selling pure lead and shipping it in those usps boxes that would hold 70 lbs of lead and shipped cheap. or better yet go to your local scrap yard and just buy it there for whatever goin rate is.

I've melted down shot to cast pistol bullets for smokeless, moderate velocity loads. For any black powder use generally dead soft lead is the best. I will use lead sheeting and other fairly soft lead for round ball and conicals for cap & ball revolvers but for minies you need to have REAL SOFT lead.

My step-dad bought me a hundred pounds of lead shot one time...long time ago...and I used it for many years to caste Roundies and Conicals for my smoke poles. The lead was a little hard and I did notice that my groups opened up a noticable amount. Still hunting accurate, but definately not fireing line competition accurate. So I hunted, practised and plinked with my homemade caste bullets and shot commercial at the competitions... ???
 
I recently went out and bought 200 lbs + of nice soft lead, that I picked up at a recycle yard in Ft Collins. Awesome nice to be shooting soft lead again. Gone are my 2 1/2 to 3 inch groups and once again I'm casting projectiles that shoot into inch to inch and half groupings. The improvement in the accuracy of my rifles is a pleasure.

Contact some of your local contractors who do remodeling.It was a common practice in past years to use sheet lead in bathrooms and roofing.When they remodel something today this lead is usualy removed.My buddy has given me enough lead to last a couple of lifetimes that he has removed. This type of lead is very soft and excellent for muzzleloading.

Another good place to check is OLD hardware stores in little backwater towns, like Podunk Center! They often have some plumbers lead gathering dust in a corner somewhere.

I pretty much use nothing but WW's. Its the easiest for me to get. I did use shot at one point to try and will save ths for my 30-30 & 45 Colt. I had several tins of Crosman pellets for an airgun I no longer had so i melted up the remaining pellets and they seemed pretty soft for roun ball and conical.
But WW's are typically all I use. I get my supply from the local auto club when they do the fall/spring tire clinics. Should be getting another 30lbs or so if i'm lucky.

Here is a pure lead source.  Check with plumbing supply houses.  Also industrial battery repair shops, (electric forklift batteries.)  Mark C. Pope company in Atlanta sells 1# lead bars, (1-800-299-2999).

Another place you might scrounge lead is stained glass shops that do their own fabrication. They have lots of scrap ends of the long ("H" shaped on end) strips of lead that they put between the glass plates and solder together. It is pretty soft stuff. Plenty soft for RB & conicals. I went into one place and told them it was for fishing sinker casting ('cause most artsy folks are anti gun) and they handed me two buckets full of strips that were 12-18" long. If they were to get insistant on the used I would have admitted to using them for muzzle loading/black powder shooting. Most libs consider that type of firearm relatively harmless, quaint, and tolerable. This, from those who teach tolerance but want to ban your guns. I haven't gone back in a few years. Once the price of commodities shot up a lot of shops forund they could sell it to scrap yards rather than have to pay to have it hauled off.
