Troy Bilt Horse Help
« on: March 14, 2012, 01:54:36 PM »
I have a 74 horse that i got out of a fence row. It had no carb when i got it. I cant figure how to hook up the linkage and was wondering if some one could post picture of there linkage. It has a Tecumseh engine. I have a picture of what my set up looks like hope this helps.

I did a search on Google for "Troy Bilt Horse Service Manual"  and may have  found a few sites with the free information which you seek.  I suggest you do a search for the info you desire.  There were also specific sites with info for the carb job for a troy bilt horse, which included schematics.

I did not know what Tecumseh engine you have, which is something you need to know before you try to add that carb.  Other than that, the only linkage you should have is for the throttle, the choke and the govenor. Most of the time the govenor is controlled by a spring, the throttle most likely is a cable and the choke will either be a cable or linked.

wish I could help here, but our "Horse" is from the 60's and has an aftermarket engine on it (Kohler) the rest of our tillers are from this decade.  The biggest thing is the governor must try to pull the throttle plate closed (spring pressure usually controlled by an arm off the governor assy) while the throttle control tries to pull the throttle plate open.  The old Tecumseh engines tended to "hunt" when not under a load.

Other than that, try to find a service manual, Troy built still supports the models from the 60's so you can try talking with them.

Figured it out. Had to make a top plate for the carb. The carb was wrong model for that year. Everything works well. I tilled a fourth of the garden tonight.  :)

good to hear!!  Keep an eye on the oil level in the gear box, and watch the seals at the wheel axles as well as the tine shafts.  Troy Built  still supports it with replacement parts.  ;)
