Lengthened .44 Magnum case?
« on: August 23, 2012, 07:14:39 AM »
I'd like a chamber that would handle both .44 Magnum and .44 Special cartridges, as well as duplicate performance of the .445 Supermag and 444 Marlin.  I'm envisioning a long (~2.5") straight-walled chamber that would take all these cartridges to at or about 444 Marlin levels.

Lofty Goals:

~250gn projectile
~3000 FPS
~5000 Ft-lb energy at muzzle

Now that I'm thinking harder about it, I may be entering 410 From Hell territory.

Thoughts? (Other than "this guy is a nut).

Your goal of  a 250 gr. 44 cal. bullet @ 3000 FPS is rather inflated. A friend and I have made a 44 cal. wildcat cartridge with a 2.9" case length and it wount produce that kind of performance at a safe pressure level, ( See 44 Bodeen ).   ;)

Sounds like a hoot, jedman.

In reality, it's more important to me that I can use one chamber for several cartridges, mostly for the unique factor and the ability to share revolver ammunition.  Also considering 454 Casuul and 460 S&W Magnum (of course, the 500 S&W Magnum/499 Hubel Express Option is interesting....).

jedman--your 44 Bodeen is in a levergun platform, correct?  It's been indicated the HandiRifle (SB2 platform) is stronger than the marlin/levergun load levels for .45-70, I bet your .44 Bodeen is in the same boat.

What powders have you been trying?  I assume you're trying to stick to 30-40Ksi pressure range in your loadings?

jkpq45,   The 44 Bodeen is not my  wildcat,  Its the brainchild of Bikerbeans and we worked together to chamber a handi barrel for it.  I dont know of any modern leverguns that would chamber a cartridge that long.
The handi rifle seems plenty strong to take higher pressures than what has been tested so far, the recoil has been the limiting factor.
Right now its being loaded with IMR 3031 powder ,  Quickload predicts IMR 4198 would give higher velocities but there are no present plans to  go there.
