Ok, its a done deal.  The 25-06 barrel leaves monday to become a .375.  I called and asked the old man should I have the rebore done myself then send him the barrel for chambering or did he have someone in mind to do the rebore.  I told him the best price I had found was $225 and he said that was too much to just send it to him and he would handle the rest.  Its great to have a gunsmith in the family that does pro bono work and an FFL holder 2 miles away that charges me nada for transfers.  ;D

I transposed the chamber pressure figure on the breech force calculation, made the correction in my reply, it's still fine tho, the 270 Win at 65kpsi is 11,277 psi and the 500S&W is 13038 psi in comparison.  ;)  Now all ya have to do is find a reamer!!  :D

Hmmm, this thread got me to thinking about my 375 Whelen Improved project which is on hold due to having to pay $900 in taxes this year instead of getting a $1500 refund!  :-\ You could just have it chambered to 375 H&H Ackley, and mark it reduced loads only, then if anyone loaded a full pressure round in it, the extra chamber capacity would reduce pressure to well within the Handi's capability, I ran it thru QuickLoad, a 64kpsi load in the larger chamber(10gr water more capacity) produces just 50kpsi pressure and 10335 psi breech thrust. The advantage would be the reamer is available for rent at both reamer rental sources, and Redding dies for $80 plus less expensive brass, just load it to Handi safe pressures, and the straighter chamber may even help reduce breech thrust.

No problem on the reamer.  It has already been purchased for my dads double rifle project.  Plenty of brass too.  The AI version is on the belted case right, Tim?  I think I just want to stick with the rimmed case.  Seems like rimmed cartridges just belong in a handi.  Thanks for the suggestion though.  P.S.  Sorry Uncle Sam is hitting you so hard this year. >:(

Yes, the 375H&H Ackley is just an AI version of the 375H&H, it's also one of the better Ackley chamberings that provides a good improvement over the parent cartridge, in fact, the more I think about it, the more interesting it looks over the 375 Whelen Improved, specially if I can get away with just neck sizing with a collet die, I already have a Hornady 375H&H die set!  ;D

thanks,

Tim

Now we are talking. Having a 375 handi is almost as cool as the 45-120.  :D

I know this tread is a little old, but I am curious how this project turned out. Did the conversion of the 25-06 barrel to handle .375 H&H Flanged go well?

I've got a 375 Winchester just about done, used a takeoff Weatherby Magunum barrel.  Should be quite a thumper I would say.  The cartridge on the right is a 38 special for comparison.  Larry

A fancy 38-55 that can utilize commonly available jacketed .375" bullets instead of playin with uncommon oversize cast bullets!  ;D

OK, close enough to a 38-55, even though a bit shy of being a 'real .38 cal.  ;)

So no one knows if this was a success or fail? I wonder if its a worthy project to pick up...

Dunno why Jason hasn't replied, but it didn't happen, he's working on a custom .458" barrel now tho which I hope he tells us about, I think he's waiting for it to be rebored.

Tim, Liked your .338-06. Sharp gun.

hex,

all Handi projects are worth the work, success or failure.  I would think that Larry's approach is more economical than a rebore.

Larry, If you don't mind my asking, what is your price range on completion of the project?
