 Welcome dock.  :)

You came to the right place. I've learned more about cannons here than all other sources combined.

You don't need much fancy equipment to press in trunnions, but one of these would be nice to have around for larger barrels (and many other uses)...

Dockholidaiy,  Victor gave you some good advice.  This is exactly the same press that we use several times a year.  Why pay big bucks when you don't use the tool every week?  Evidence of our use is below. We were pressing the rim-base/trunnions for the breech-loading Krupp 1866 Howitzer firecracker cannon at the time.  52 were pressed in for that batch without any difficulty.

Welcome to the board.  With the "Dockholidaiy" handle, are you a boating enthusiast?

Tracy and Mike

The .750' dia. drill bit sends out a big steel pig's tail chip.  Since these big drill bits have a large drill point, the boring bar is used to flatten the hole right at .700" deep.

Here we are using the  H.F. 20 ton press to push the Trunnion/Rimbase into the hole.  No pics of turning these.  Mike is way too fast and I handle the compressed air cooling and measuring.  The holes are 1.0020", so the rimbase is turned to 1.0035.  .0015 interference is plenty for a very tight fit.  Two secrets here are put a 5 deg. bevel about .25" long on a one inch press-fit pin and use a very small pinch (about the size of a small ladybug) of lithium grease on that inserted bevel end.  We use a 15 second dwell-time, at max pressure, to get the hdw. to the hole's bottom.  If your cannon has some recoil, be sure to follow up with welding the rimbase to the tube.  This is far superior to any other system.  Firecracker cannon don't recoil, so welding is NOT necessary.

Smokin' my pipe on the mountings, sniffin' the mornin'-cool,
I walks in my old brown gaiters along o' my old brown mule,
With seventy gunners be'ind me, an' never a beggar forgets
It's only the pick of the Army that handles the dear little pets - 'Tss! 'Tss!

Tracy and Mike, I think the "Dockholidaiy" moniker is a play on "Doc Holiday" the consumptive, fast draw, gun-slinging, gambling, card shark Doctor of the Wyatt Earp days fame...but "Doc Holiday" has already been taken, I think.... LOL, I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong....

If you sweat fit a trunnion does it still need welded?  If so would this be enough weld. Thanks

Pretty weld.  TIG or MIG?  You have to be sure you get good penetration and sometimes MIG is lacking.

The welds are tig. Thanks for the compliments but they where done by a friend at his auto body shop for us. We have a MIG welder but like you said its hard to do MIG on real heavy steel and get penetration.
