45/70 Happy Owner & Shooter
« on: March 24, 2012, 08:36:56 AM »
Howdy:

Wonder if any of you are enjoying the 45/70 as I do ? Beautiful weather here today, and out shooting. This dang rifle is shooting all the slugs into one hole, almost without fail. I'm still researching what will be my "go-to" load. It will not be a tooth puller, shoulder dislocater, but a sure killer out to around 100 yards. I'm there, already, but, now, I'm fascinated by this gun. I got the barrel on GB forums, and now, really appreciate this ole caliber.

To be sure, it's a target gun, fun to shoot and very pleasant. Right now, I am experminting with AA-2200 powder and 300 grain cast. I'll chrno them, have my chrno cleaned up, but not totally reliable, yet. Shot a bunch of 22 rimfires thru it yesterday, and it's about 70-80 % reliable, now.

This is one fun NEF/H&R rifle. Hope to hear from all who enjoy this one as much as I do. I'm also open to your favorite loads, but I don't want the dinosaur or cape buffalo killers.

Best,

My favorite is 30 grains of IMR-4198 under a 405 grain cast bullet.  One hole at 100 yards.

If you are located in WY maybe we can get together in the future and swap some recipes.  (Lord willing) I'll be working in Rawlins soon and would like to do some serious shooting.
My BC (that the son inherited) absolutely loved Rem. 300 grn'ers over a max dose of H-4198.  At 300 meters it would put them all in a 6 inch circle ( had I scoped the rifle it would have been better IMHO).
Best of luck with your new hobby.

Thanks for all replies:  I live in SW Louisiana. This 45/70 I'm in love with, yes, I know I could head shoot turkeys with it, or better still, shoot em in the neck and not splatter stuff all over.

This gun is just a natural great shooter. I've never had one like this.

I actually killed a gobbler with a 45-70 once. 20 yds through top of the back side to side didn't mess up any meat

My favorite load is a 365 grain round flat bullet that I cast over 15 grains of Universal Clays.  Does a bit over 1200 feet, so it's a very mild load.  Inch and an eigth at 100 yards.

It's a sweet and extremly versitle cartridge, espcially in the Handi due to it's strength.

Got a tom last fall with the 45-70 using 405 grain cast bullet over a max load of Trailboss powder.

My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.
