Keep some spare frames around
« on: March 25, 2012, 12:41:56 AM »
At the moment, Patty and I have sixteen Handis, one Huntsman and three shotguns.  All are on their own dedicated frame, and NONE are tweaked in any way.  Along the line, a couple had temporary pivot shims etc. until a proper fitting frame came along.

I try to keep three spare SB2 frames at all times.  I buy most of them in my home state and avoid FFL transfers etc.  When I buy a barrel, invariably one of the frames will fit well, if not perfectly.  If I have one that's ok, but not the way I want it, I try it on the next frame I get.  I buy only SB2 frames.  In fact, my Huntsman and pistol calibers are on them.  Needed? No.  Having them all on SB2s gives me a lot more flexibility.

I've got to warn you.  There is a hazard in keeping spare frames.  When you have them and a couple of stock sets collecting dust, it's real easy to sucker yourself into putting another rifle together.

Keeping three spares is roughly a 300 dollar investment, but I feel it is well worth it.......besides, I like to be tempted ::)

Pete,  I keep buying an entire gun to get the frame......then I get to eyeballing the barrel.  Should I sell it or just keep it?  Might as well keep it, can't get a whole lot for it anyway.  Now I'm still short a receiver.  And on...and on... :o         Now I need another safe.

Yeah guys, I know.  John, (gendoc) has a .22 Versa-pack barrel for sale now.  Do I need another .22 :-\ :-\   And so it continues. ::)

Pete,

I need you to buy that versa from John.  I've been fighting the temptation for several days, and it would help me out a lot.

Thanks,

I try to keep three spare SB2 frames at all times.

Remember those 3 extra frames I had some time back Pete?  You know, the ones I didn't need because I had all the barrels I could ever imagine wanting?   :-\

Well, they have all been fitted to barrels, don't ask me what, and I had to get 2 more new ones so I'd have spares sitting in the safe...   Bought them from a member here in state, and if he had two (or three) more I'd buy them also!  I'm a sick man...  :-[

And it started way back when you first posted about keeping 3 extra receivers... seemed like a good idea at the time... I got 4 extra stock sets also....   :'(

Richard, I know.  It doesn't end.  I have at least 3 spare stock sets now too.  I keep thinking about those eight .35 Whelen's down state at Cabelas for 229 bucks the guys posted about today in another thread.  Geeze....I could buy two, keep one as is, take the stock and frame from the other and sell the barrel and the old stock set.  I find myself roaming around the internet looking at barrel blanks and shotgun barrels for stubs.....what could I do with that one, etc., etc.  If we had a real gunsmith anywhere around here, I'd be in really big trouble.

Right now I've got 7 extra frames... 3 SB1's and 4 SB2's and 9 complete stock sets. I like having a few different frames to try the barrels on. Like Pete says... I don't like having to tweak them to fit. I keep the SB1's around for shotgun and pistol barrels but eventually I'll have only SB2's.

petemi, Deerhunter#1, mechanic, AtlLaw, Spanky - You guys are seriously infected with the Handi virus.  You better keep away from the rest of us plain Handiholics, it's a very contagious virus.

Unfortunately, I think the HandiVirus spreads thru the internet, I've been thinking along those same lines lately.  I have more barrels than receivers.  The only thing immunizing me from catching a bad case is the FFL-fee vaccination.  I don't know how long the FFL-fee vaccination lasts. :P

Is there any hope?

My quandary, I personally, don't think I have enough Handi's but, I know I have more Handi's than I really need or should have.

All of this suggests a question:  Since H&R sells accessory barrels, but not frames, there has to be more barrels in circulation than frames.  Where do the extra frames come from ??? ???   Must be the work of the Good Frame Fairy.

CW,  in case you didn't know, the Good Frame Fairy is a first cousin to The Good Beer Fairy who was St. Patrick's mentor.  That's where Guiness Stout, Harp, etc. came from.  They are also purveyors of quality shims.  There's a lot of history in that family 8) ::)

I have 4 extra frames now. I have unloaded a bunch of my barrels lately that I had doubles/triples of, or lost interest in.

There a couple barrels I am keeping my eye out for, and after that, I'm done!  ::) ;D

I have been hot and heavy in Encores and Contenders lately since there are so many different, odd, and wildcat calibers chambered in their barrels. For example, I finally have the 7-30 Waters in route that I have always wanted.   :-[

I still love Handi's, but I can love both, right?  ;D

oldschoolranger there is a cure but you will have to loose your sight so you cant see, loose both hands so you cant type and your hearing so someone else cant tell you what is on the sight. And even them when infected you will find a way as you know.  :)

I was tickled to find a friend near home with an SB1 for sale, then when I got there to buy it I found out he still had the 410 barrel for it so got both.... got it home and it fit the 20 ga. barrel I had perfectly, So instead of me getting my frame for a .357 barrel I have been wanting, my wife ended up with a sweet .410 20 ga combo gun.... and I am still frames short. Just seems like we never get the numbers even on stocks frames and barrels... But I like it.  :D     thejanitor

I could see how extra frames are a good thing if you have had the disease for a while.  It gets easier to control with practice.  I have only been afflicted for 4 months now and I tried the extra frame idea.  The first lasted 2 days before a new barrel was put on it and the other lasted 2.5 days before a new barrel was on it.  Frames=enabling.  I am proud of myself.  Last week I made it the entire week without buying a handi or barrel.  This coming weekend I plan on making up for it by buying 2!   ;)
