Finally found a Remington Model 12
« on: July 19, 2012, 10:56:02 AM »
Last Monday I ran across this model 12C (serial # 562xxx) at an antique store. Bought it for $335. I have been looking for one for several years as it is the same model gun I learned to shoot with as a kid. Most I have run across were either to pricy or had serious issues. This one has two short hairline cracks in the grip area and it must of had a lot of rust on it at some point. The barrel looked like the inside of a NYC sewer pipe but you could make out distinct rifling. I did a lot of scrubbing and then shot it. It hit about 5-6 inches to the upper right with about a 4" three shot group @ 50'. Looked closer at the front site and it was a bit bent and also had no bead at all. I continued to work and work on barrel and then started shooting to drift the front site until it was hitting center. I then built up the front site with J-B Weld. It is now hitting at POA and is grouping around a half inch using CCI Standard velocity. Functions great otherwise.

Great find. I learned to shoot with my dad's Mod. 12 when I could barely hold it up. It sits in my safe today and does duty as my gopher gun. It's always been a very accurate little rifle.

The last one I found for sale was a couple of years ago and it made yours look really good. Looked like it had spent a long time sitting in a barn or behind a pickup seat. I could have had it for the low price of $350 because it was " collectable" according to the dealer. I don't understand why people abuse or neglect nice firearms---among other things.

I was really blown away when after buying the rifle I stopped in at an indoor range/gun shop to pick up some standard velocity .22s. They had a 12C there that was about the same condition wood wise as mine and a bit better metal finish. I don't know what they would have actually sold it for but the tag was $1,050!!!

I had one for several years that was so nice I didn't want to take it out of the safe for fear of damaging it.  My philosophy on guns has changed over the years until I reached the point I don't want anything that I won't take to the woods.

I traded it for an H&R 17hmr, a H&R 22 mag, several boxes of ammo, a 12 guage shotgun, and $400.00 cash.  Based on what these things bring, you got a good deal.

It is an excellent rifle, and shows the degree of craftsmanship available at that time.

Enjoy it, and leave a couple squirrils for me!

What years were the model 12 made?  I have one that belonged to my father. First gun he bought when he was a kid. Said he bought it used for 2 bucks. If my figures are right should make it over 90 years old. Been in my gun cabinet for 22 years and i have never fired it. Alway use my old Winchester model 69.
