GMC Fuel Pumps !!!

Who was the brain surgeon that came up with the idea of putting the fuel pump in the fuel tank? Geeez. It took me 4 hours to get the tank off of my Suburban and change out the pump.
Perception is everything. For instance, a crowded elevator smells different to a midget.

Dogshooter,
Ya, I've had to replace mine twice in my '90 Oldsmobile 88.  Never failed but got pretty loud by the time I had them changed.  I also changed out the fuel filter 2nd time around.....you don't think that caused it do you????
Seems they are submerged in the fuel tank to keep them from overheating.  Good idea to keep the tank at least 1/2 full.

Well ford has been doing it since at least 86, I had to change one in my brother in laws 86 f250, at least you can get the GM pumps at the local parts store, but NOOO, not with the ford, they have not released the patent on it yet, so you have to go get raped by the dealer for one

Dodge Rams are the same. I would gladly go back to the old fuel pumps.

Yeah, it's a pain. Mine went on my '90 Burb about 2 years ago. I decided to let a shop do it, since I had just filled the 40 gal. tank. It only cost me $130 so it was well worth it.

I have a 97 Z-71 7 have replaced the pump twice in the last six months.  Doing it myself.  Be sure to replace the wiring between the pump & upper bracket.  That is what failed on mine the second time.

Hmmm, so I was right about restoring my '73 Suburban because it would be cheaper and easier to maintain, oh yeah, I replaced my pump last summer, $35, 45 minutes of work, not too tough. :)

All of the new ones are in the tank anymore supposed to last longer that way.. but they really dont tell ya unless you get 1/4 tank or above the pump doesnt get cooled and over time will burn out prematurely.. i replace enough of them when i was at gm and dodge to tell ya they do burn up early
