« on: June 27, 2006, 01:26:46 AM »
I NORMALLY CONSIDER MYSELF RATHER KNOWLEDGEABLE IN THE FIELD OF FIREARMS . NOT EVERYTHING , JUST MOST . WOULD SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN NEW VS OLD VAQUERO . NONE OF MY BLUE BOOKS MAKE THAT DESTINCTION. HAVE A GOOD HANDFUL OF BLACKHAWKS AND SUPER BLACKHAWKS . AS FAR AS I AM CONCERENED THE ARE ALL 'SUPER'
I WANT TO GET INTO S.A.S.S. AND THEY DO NOT LIKE MY ADJUSTABLE REAR SIGHTS . I WOULD RATHER HAVE A PISTOL THAT I CAN SHOOT MY " BLACKHAWK" LOADS....MOST OF THE COMMENTARY SAYS GET AN OLDER VAQUERO ! PLEASE DEFINE...
I APPRECIATE YOUR RESOPONCE,

The "older" was built with a frame that could handle your Blackhawk loads. The newer ones have been down sized to Colt Specs and SHOULD NOT be used with fullhouse loads. I believe they down sized it for meet the needs of CAS shooters.

Personally, I don't like the feel of it. I prefer the older one and will be keeping my feelers out for one.

We love adjustable rear sights.  You're more than welcome to shoot adjustable sight revolvers in the "Modern" class.  If you've ever watched the show "Cowboys," the host, Tequila, is a Modern category shooter.  Last I heard, the Ruger Blackhawk that he started with was still going strong.  It started out as his hunting/trail gun.

You can also use adjustable sights in some of the age based categories.  Sassnet.com has a link to all the rules.  Don't worry about springing for another pair of guns until you're sure you really want them.

Having shot both the new and old Vaqueros, I prefer the feel of the old Vaquero.  The new Vaquero grips are just too narrow to feel right in my hands, but lots of shooters love them.  If you show up at any cowboy match, you should be able to find examples of both to compare side by side.  Just ask around, and folks will be lining up to show off the guns they use.

another fan of the old ones. The new ones just dont settle right in my hand and that big hammer bites the web of the hand when speed shooting when you cock it. To give them credit though there a little bit better fit out of the box and have a better trigger pull

Well, I don't know about a 'bisley' grip, but I for one am waiting anxiously for one in .44 special.  I may have to end up buying a .357 and converting it!  I have a 5 1/2 .45 SS 'New' vaquero wearing stag now and a SS 4 5/8 on layaway.  I have small hands and the gun 'fits' very well.  I really like it!  44 Man

Me I like the new one, with only two exceptions.  The thing needs to be timed rite out of the box, don't like seeing the bolt drop half way between notches.  And that funky loading with the loading gate being what unlocks the cylinder to load and unload, just too many years with colts I guess!  Actual almost bought one, but was realy turned off by the cylinder bold dropping way way to early.  That's the only negative thing I can say about it.  The grip and frame are a great fit to my hand and are very close to original colts.

And if 38 grains of black powder and a pure lead 250 grain bullet travelling at 1000fps aint' hot enough for you I don't want to try your loads! ;D

I've got a 4 5/8" blued RNV, .45 Colt that I carry everyday. So far it has had exactly 25 factory round, (225gr. Win. SilverTips), fired through it for printing purposes. Everything else has been hand loaded. I've got to tell ya', I've been even more pleased with this one than my previous Ruger "Old" Vaqueros! Fits my hand better, true, but it is more than that...

Right out of the box it was smoother and had a lighter trigger pull than I recall from any of my other three Rugers when new. The fixed sights were right in line horizotal plane as well. (More a matter of luck than anything else really. Vertical depends on the load.) The throat diameters were, for once, all equal and a nice .4525" in diameter. Fit and finish ar better than the previous revolvers I've owned, including the Smiths. The bore on this thing is slick. Very slick. I absolutely LOVE the reverse indexing pawl! (I wonder why I never thought of that before?) While it simply can't be as strong as the "Old" model, it is still quite a solid bit of work! Personally, I use it for hunting, target work, simple fun -and- as my concealled carry gun every single day and feel very well armed.

There are some negatives. The most obvious is the smaller frame and cylinder sizes. Less steel = less strength. Simple common sense. Having the "Colt-clicks" in the hammer would have been a nice touch. It has a lock. Well hidden, but there. Mainly that just ticks me off about society more than Ruger. Ruger is, after all, a business. Besides, with three small kids in the house I've found myself using it.  :o Go figure...
Short list, eh?

One would be a fool to load these little sweeties as hot as some do the big hoglegs they come from. Period. I load mine often to near maximum specs with no show of pressure issues or wear. As of this morning it has digested 1200 rounds of various loads from CAS loads to "hunting loads" using 280 & 300 grainers. Still, I avoid the heavy loads listed as Ruger Only like the plague! You should too. Out of curiousity I called Ruger and asked to what levels they proof-tested these models. The answer was, well, surprising. I'll not quote it here because it *might* give some the wrong idea. Handloader magazine did a well written article on loading for these RNVs a couple of months ago that I have to concur with completely. For my next trrick I'll be loading with the Penn Bullet's 270gr. Thunderheads. Even at reasonable velocity they should prove more than acceptable in the field. Besides, when I plug a deer or hog with a .45 Colt I grab for my Winchester Trapper.  :P

Oh! I agree with the signature above about a 38grs. of black powder and a 255 gr slug! I've used those in this Ruger as well with outstanding results.

Oh yeah! On the "Negatives" add the "Ruger-ring" on the cylinder. I see it so often on Rugers I now just fail to notice it!  ;)

I was looking at a new Vaquero 45LC  4 5/8 at a gun shop today. At first I didn't think I'd like the new Vaqueros but after looking at this one, if they're all as good as this one, I've changed my mind. The barrel to cylinder gap was tight. The cylinder throats were the right size and they all seemed to be the same. Looks like maybe Ruger has finally figured out shooters don't want oversized chambers with undersized throats. The gun locked up with hardly any movement in the cylinder. The trigger was crisp and reasonable. I liked how the chambers lined up with the loading gate. And it is so nice to see Ruger put that annoeying warning on the underside of the barrel. I hope they're all this good.

Hope you guys don't mind somebody with a .357 New Vaquero jumping in.  ;)
I just got it and decided that I HATED the New Vaquero hammer and started looking around. Found out that Power Custom has a replacement hammer/trigger kit that replicates the Colt style hammer with a half-cock notch, also comes with Wolf replacement springs. Used them in my .357 New Vaquero and turned it into something REALLY different, slicker than snail snot. HTH

Old compared to New Vaquero in 45 Colt.
