trouble shooting after trigger job
« on: March 28, 2012, 03:50:14 PM »
Could not find this in the FAQ.
Just completed an action job using perklo's instructions. This is my first time taking a handi action completely apart. Went well except the rifle will now open with the hammer cocked. I did not check to see if it could do that before the work so I checked a few other actions. Most will not open with the hammer cocked but a 20 ga NEF shotgun which I bought used and shows obvious signs of of the pins being driven out in the past and an NEF 22LR also bought used but with no signs of ever being worked on both open with the hammer cocked.  Can anyone point me in the right direction to trouble shoot this defect?

I suspect some will open with the hammer cocked, I checked over a dozen of mine, the '94 Pardner, which I bought new and never had appart, will open.

Neither does mine (open while cocked). Perhaps not a bad thing. I wish mine would open while cocked. Could be unloaded without lowering the hammer. I can't think of a downside, at least from a safety standpoint.

Thanks
I checked 5 handi rifles and 4 shotguns and I have one shotgun and 2 rifles, that will open with the hammer cocked, (a 22 rimfire and the old 223 I just worked on. From the responses especially from so many experienced people, its not clear if the manner of reassembly could cause the problem.  If anyone has experience with isolating and correcting the cause of this characteristic, let me know.

cab32,

Some shotguns and rifles will open when cocked.  This is normal and has nothing to do with simple reassembly.  This, of course, is true if none of the components have been altered in such a way that would change their relationship with others in the lockup chain.

I just checked 5 actions, 3 of the action release levers will not move at all when cocked and  2 of the action release levers will move and the action releases some but does not open. If you have a release lever that moves when the hammer is cocked and the  action latch does not engage the barrel latch very much then that may be why some open.  You may be able to adjust the latch and fix this. If it bothers you that much.
